Some people don't even realize they're depressed. Still though, when suicidal thoughts start to creep in, they have to know it's not normal. Part of deep depression is not wanting to be a burden on others. When it gets really bad, they believe their existence is a burden on others. When somebody takes their own life, they believe it to be a selfless act.

Your post about information overload was legit. Very solid points and I think you might be on to something.

Keep fighting the good fight everyday.

If they realize they are a burden why don't they get help? I mean if just seems like if they know people love them why does killing oneself seem like the only solution. If you you have enough time to feel like a burden why does one not think about the pain it will cause their own children and love ones when they commit suicide.

Depression is the biggest cancer there is. Hang in there OP. It's hard but just remember she is at rest now. And not having to deal with her darkness anymore.

Many people that commit suicide are already under professional care, just like any other illness treatments are not 100% effective. Making a rational decision requires a properly working brain, something that is absent in most of these cases. Depending on the illness it is not exactly a decision they made, some are in a constant battle with a inner voice that is telling them to kill themselves, the battle becomes overwhelming and they give in just to make it stop and have some peace.

This is some serious illness. After my friends son killed himself at the beginning of the year I returned home after the funeral and gathered my 3 kids(ages 19,17, 16) up in the living room. I told them face to face if you ever get that low and this crosses your mind please let me know because I will not go through what my best friend and his wife have gone through and will go through for the rest of their lives.

Were her initials MD? If so, I know her too. I figure she was around 38 although I'm not completely sure.

In the last week, my friends husband died of an OD and my friend MD died of a suicide. She struggled with drug and alcohol abuse for at least the last few years.

I sincerely empathize with you and her family. Losing someone to suicide is so difficult to rationalize. It is similar to mourning the murderer of a loved one at first; is extremely confusing and traumatic to the family. It takes time to understand.

Sometimes shite happens that cannot be fixed, that no one can talk you through; you have to find a reason to keep going on your own.

This is a key point, that the depressed person has to find meaning themselves, and has to truly work at it. Unfortunately being depressed makes one see everything through shite-colored glasses, making the task seem impossible. It's a tough disease because no, there are things that cannot be fixed. But i do believe that anyone is capable of learning coping skills.

Let's be honest, life in the USA is pretty good and we are pretty spoiled.

Pretty good?????? Pretty spoiled?????

I've said it many times that every American should spend 3 months in places like central or west Africa, anywhere in ME or across the border in Mexico......trust me they'll all come back kissing the ground and realizing just how frickING GREAT they have it.

This sentence says a lot. YOU will not go through it, huh? Do you have any idea what level of despair that a person must reach to take their own life? I don't care how things look for that person on the outside. Depression doesn't allow a person to think, "man, you've really got things great."

I'm close to this situation. Not going into the details, but extremely sad. I can't wrap my head around this.

Suffering is part of the human condition. Nobody escapes unscathed. I view life as a journey that will inevitably take me to some tragic/ painful places, and my job is to deal with it with acceptance. You have to accept reality, and be compassionate towards yourself and others.

I think that many people with severe depression are unable to ever get to a positive acceptance for whatever reason. They lack the kind of philosophical/spiritual acceptance of the tragic nature of life to overcome the rockiest patches. And suicide just looks like relief from suffering.

Anticipate suffering, imagine loss , prepare yourself for life's worst moments in a philosophical/ spiritual manner and you can navigate them with acceptance.

I had a friend commit suicide via a drag car this weekend. Everyone thought he had a heart attack till his girlfriend found the note in his truck at the speedway. No one had a clue what was going on in his head and he should zero signs of depression.

Initials TD?

Coot, sorry for your loss man. It's very hard to spot the symptoms sometimes. And a lot of these medications on the market today have symptoms of depression/suicidal thoughts. Read some of the prescription labels...it's alarming.
