My experience at the Kyiv University Medical University bathrooms

I will never forget visiting The Kyiv Medical University in Ukraine with Anichka and her friend this past autumn. One thing stood out to me immediately, as it was the only location where I had seen any Muslims in all of my 8 days in Ukraine. The Muslim students were everywhere, most of the female students were wearing veils or hijabs.

The campus was old but attractive, and I went to get a cappuccino and then to the bathroom while Anichka and her friend met with an admissions advisor. I was literally staggered by the smell the instant I walked into the bathroom. I could see that there was shite all over the stalls and the floor, and used toilet paper was strewn everywhere. It was the most disgusting smell and sight I've encountered in my life. I ran outside and spend the next 10 minutes trying to unsee what I had seen. My gag reflex kept engaging and I was still trying to prevent myself from vomiting some time later - I decided to keep things to myself but I could tell that the girls were worried.

We had traveled and stayed in the most remote villages of Ukraine during the preceding week, and nothing like this had occurred - even when there was no running water and rather primitive outhouses, they were always well maintained and had ammonia nearby that was regularly applied to quash bad smells.

It dawned on me why this had only occurred at the University - it was the Muslim students. I had heard anecdotes about this before - special restrooms and toilets being built in Minneapolis to accommodate the many Somalian Muslim students, "how to" placards placed in public restrooms around Detroit explaining not to sit on the porcelain toilets, but I had no idea that they would literally refuse to try assimilating unless they were accommodated. No wonder these $50,000 bathroom renovations were so quickly approved!

One less publicized aspect of this clash of cultures is the difference in the way individuals use the bathroom facilities, with many recent Muslim arrivals having no idea how to use standard Western-style toilets.

Many of the Muslim migrants and “refugees” are reportedly “mystified” by Western-style toilets, and have resorted to simply defecating outdoors, on the floors, in showers, standing on top of toilets, or basically anywhere else they feel like it.

That problem has actually become so widespread that some towns have responded by passing out leaflets pleading with the migrants to follow the rules, including in their use of the bathroom facilities.

Critics, however, have labeled such efforts as “racist” and “insensitive” toward Muslim culture.

“Because everyone knows: Different cultures also mean different scale latrines. For Muslims, it is important that when using a toilet, one’s back does not face Mecca. In addition, latrines for men and women have to separate from each other, and the floor cannot be green in colour, because that is the colour of Islam.”
