30,000 people getting the ax Monday
No more details, what time Monday, etc
Really sucks for me. Wife and kids and new home. Been doing this 11 years and have no clue what's out there or what the hell resumes look like these days. Haven't looked for a job since I was 23.
Monday is an odd day to do it IMO. Should be an interesting day.

telecommunications- massive company(200,000+ employees)
its massive and this is part 1 of 2 layoffs. this round is 30,000, next round in the fall is another 10k.
kind of scary. never been through this. we will get severance if laid off but still. mine will be around 17 weeks.

Didn't you tell us this a few weeks ago? Why haven't you been putting out resumes?
Also, didn't you say they hired entertainers like Chris Tucker?

You get 17 weeks severance? That's pretty good.

Sounds like ATT. Regardless I hope this leads to bigger and better things for you.

Post AT&T - DirecTV merger?
Sorry to hear. Any idea on how many of those are in Dallas (assuming you are in Dallas)? If it's 30K accross a large area it might not be horrific... 30K in one area would make it very hard to find jobs.

quote:it is scary. I got the axe the last week of feb (oil and gas casualty) and only got 2 weeks severance. the last few weeks or so have been some scary times, but I'm lucky that the wife makes decent money and we have gotten by nearly unscathed...nearly.

I started my new job this past monday in a different industry and couldn't be happier in the position that I'm in.
It gets better, put yourself out there, get in contact with recruiters and get yourself in front of open positions.

Yeah./. I was talking about this with my son. IT's hard to prepare for things like that, but I think everybody should live like they are broke. Learn to cook at home. Learn that you don't have to eat excessively. Don't get in debt, put the money up. Just for a few years.
Then go pay cash for a home. Live as debt free as you can.

Not trying to pile on but this is *exactly* why you should have been attending industry conferences, networking groups, etc. all this time. With 11 years' experience you should have extremely detailed and personal knowledge of what's in demand and be friends with specific people who have spots open or know someone who does.
You're always positioning for the next gig whether you really want another one or not.

be thankful. as a full time employee i never had a job over 27 months until my current job around 5 years. lots of layoffs, some quitting for a better job, some just short job durations when doing contract work under my S-corporation. Of course i had a 4 year job doing contract work but I wasn't an employee, i was working for myself. We are talking about full time employee work here, not contract.
11 years? that's remarkable and fantastic.

unbelievable. You are so lucky. you'll be ok.

Yes I've been very fortunate. Thanks for the prayers. Not asking for a violen to play
Yes Chris tucker performed it was on the schedule for months
They pushed back the layoffs to Monday. Some HR thing
The 30,000 is nationwide, however it's only in the sales department which is about 80,000 total, so 40% of workforce gone in 48 hours.
Yes it's hard to believe but I'm dead serious I've never looked for a job in 11 years. I've been promoted 4 times and love my job. I've never been below 100% of my quota and just won a huge award for 2015. Two ways to look at that- 1. I'm fine because I'm a top performer or 2. I'm a top performer and I know am paid above the average guy so I'm very expensive.
I guess that's my fault but I do have my resume ready and have been looking.
They are also giving the laid off people till July 1 to close their shite out which I think is comical but I'm not complaining. So the way I look at it is I'm getting possibly 22 weeks of severance.

I am the opposite of you. Had a short-time job when I graduated from college. I worked for the state 20 years, retired, and worked for 20 years on my next job. Retired from it last Dec. Now my job is fishing and killing ducks.
