I don't think there's anything wrong with learning cursive, but I never understood why some people are overly passionate over the fact that some schools don't teach it anymore. It really just isn't that big of a deal.

People sure love to bitch anytime something isn't exactly how they did it growing up.

No one uses cursive anymore anyway. Why even bother, spend more time teaching math and fundamental composition skills..stuff that is actually going to make a difference in young lives.

Cursive is old and antiquated. Time teaching cursive would be much better spent in other places.

I know there was a recent push to start teaching it again because of instances where young adults don't know how to sign their name properly. Also, young people not being able to read things like thank you notes and older documents like surveys, building plans, and schematics with cursive writing on it.

Imagine being an engineer and having to ask someone how to read cursive writing on building plans.

Kids only need a briefing on how to write their signature. Besides that cursive is fricking useless. iirc, you had to write some paragraph in cursive on the SAT, but I don't see why that was ever necessary. Besides that, it's just your signature.

That justifies spending months teaching cursive writing? Just because one of the kids might pick up some old piece of paper and not know how to read it?

Sounds extremely silly to me--especially when most public school kids struggle with the fundamentals.

It is about as useful as calligraphy or needle point, but no need for a mandate.

Some people do use it, and as someone said, some couldn't write legibly without it. Count me in the "combination of print and cursive" group.

For those that said now that we have computers, we should stop teaching it... Should we also do away with basic math and spelling? After all, everyone walks around with a calculator in their pocket, and it spell checks things for you too.

It's not the most useful, but it does help with spelling, fine motor skills, repetitive practice, etc.

No, but basic computer programming, filling out a W4, basic tax prep, balancing a checkbook/budgeting, and basic negotiation skills should be taught.

Slippery slope argument just doesn't work with cursive.

You learned cursive in a week? Did you also get a 35 on your ACT and have multiple PhDs?

Last week we signed papers on an investment property. While sitting there signing this giant stack of papers I wondered how in the future people would be able to actually sign official documents without the ability to write in cursive.

My guy in Asia lives in Hong Kong. I was over there last week visiting customers. He was talking about what his first grader was doing at school. He said it was tough on her, but she had good marks in everything but cursive handwriting.

I never use cursive unless I'm signing something. Teachers were fricking liars when they said you're gonna always use cursive when you're older.

All my professors in college said they would automatically put an F on anything written in cursive.

Teaching cursive is as productive as teaching kids to use a TI-84 calculator. They'll never use it, we have better ways to do things now. We're only still doing it because we don't want to accept change.

I don't know how it is now, but "handwriting" was an entire subject when I was in school. We had a workbook and a textbook for it, and it had its own space on your report card.
