I learned cursive in 3rd grade. Pretty sure contract negotiating skills, which schedules accompany your 1040, HTML code, and general ledgers are more 4th grade material.

I write plenty, but the only time I use cursive is when I sign my name on a document or a check. Been that way since high school. Don't see that justifying months worth of time spent learning it tbh..there are more important things that could be introduced with that time.

Like someone else said, both my high school and my college teachers said anything written in cursive would be automatically an F. It is not something that others can speed read like print, and most people each have their own version of "cursive slang".. which makes it even more difficult for others to read in a quick manner.
Someone's clear print is 10x easier to read than some old lady's shaky "cursive" where they actually just write the first letter and then squiggle the rest of the way on each word.

Like, we have tons of problems with our educational system but phasing out cursive writing is pretty much not on the list.
It's an hour a day that could be used on improving math skills, or actual writing skills like sentence structure, wording, spelling, fundamental grammar, even creative writing which I think is criminally underappreciated.
More time on these things would have a greater long term effect in their school career and lives imo.

I haven't read the entire thread, but I've seen some good points made in favor of continuing to teach cursive writing. I am in favor of this, as well. I've run across articles recently which make the point that writing things or taking notes in cursive is an important link to improved learning, especially the learning of the particular subject matter at hand. The extra step or first step of writing the notes, and rewriting the notes this way helps implant the material in the minds because you're using your hands, with the brain directing the task of writing out the material.
We don't get the exact same retention going from printed material (books, or power point) straight to typing in quizlet, or simply typing notes into a word processing program, or however else you younger folks retain your notes.
It's very similar to the development that takes place in the mind and motor skills between crawling and walking. Many who go from toddler to upright walking without some crawling, sort of skip a necessary step in physical and mental development.

I started writing cursive in 4th. My wife is a 4th grade teacher in Lafayette Parish and when she occasional brings home papers to grade, I can barely read these kids print handwriting much less if they tried to write cursive.
I just think in this day and age, when 90% if not more; letter-writing, essays, proposals are done on computer, get those shite birds typing. At least if they don't make it out of highschool they can go be a secretary.

Teaching cursive is pointless. I have no idea why we suck so bad at teaching foreign language from a young age in our school systems. It seems like that is where we can make our biggest progress.
