Long Live Hawthorne

Lots of people seem to be ready for Jim to be off the air...I totally disagree knowing who is in the wings to maybe take over for him. Lynn Rollins is 100% Bubble Gum, he would be a horrible replacement. Hannagriff would be VERY droll and boring. Doug Mouton would be pretty good, but not really the "lead" guy...
So for those that want a change, Hawthorne is the guy...he is the best we have.

Gordy Rush can answer any band question we may have. I vote him.

I like Hawthorne but I guess I am considered an old-timer. I remember the years when you couldn't watch all LSU games on TV or the internet and radio was all you had. Also tuning in at night to hear his voice over here was like a little bit of home to Texas.

The Golden Badger agrees with this statement.
So does Jack Hunt.

Who is Doug mouton?
You know LSU could conceivably open up the process to replace Hawthorne when he retires and hire someone from outside the LSU family
Just like they did when they hired Jim Hawthorne

I wonder if they could clone John Ferguson? I hope they got DNA from that guy, best ever, imo

Man I love Hawthrone. He brings passion like no other I have been listening to him for years. Sometimes I start a fire outside and turn up the radio and listen to Hawthrone. Yea yea he might make a few mistakes but with his passion for the tigers he will be very hard to replace.

Jim is great if you love spirit, passion, and knowing the the final score. He's not that great if you are really interested in accurately being told how the final score was arrived at or who made the plays to get us there.

I remember a time when John Ferguson was getting bad pub, much in the way JH is now. This was late 70's early 80's. But, like the previous post, he was a familiar voice at night when trying to pull in a radio signal when far from home on a Saturday night.

Hawthorne just seems to hate his job at times. He has got increasingly more negative as he has gotten older. I call it Grumpy Old Man Syndrome.

Not quite the same topic, but another thing (among many) that I think are unique re: LSU Football is the musical ditty's the band plays when we make a first down or the D makes a stop. When trying to find the game on radio when I was a long way from home, I would often recognize the band before hearing Ferguson's voice.
I've never noticed another band doing this.

Patrick Wright...the women's sports guy....seems like the logical choice. He is forgotten about because he does the women's stuff, but I have listened to him for a long time and he is solid.

Ahhh yes I remember the days back in the early 90's listening to LSU baseball on the radio. " It's a deep fly ball, way back, way back.... Caught by the shortstop on the infield. " Who could forget that memorable moment for Jack Hunt which will forever be one of the greatest finishes in LSU football history. Glad Jim was there to make that call. God I will miss those days.... Hopefully they will find someone else with just as much passion for the game with a lack of vision or understanding of whatever sport he may be calling. This will ensure his legacy of sounding like he is watching a completely different game. He will be truly missed when he steps down....

Because of the hate here, I've tuned in more than I normally would and paid attn tothe highlights using his calls. The complaints here are petty, stupid and overblown. IMHO, YMMV

THIS, and let's be honest he could not hold jim henderson's jock strap or umm microphone that is. LSU has a bad problem with the good ole boy syndrome, we do not expect excellence in certain areas, one of them is broadcasting/announcing. see hawthorne. case closed.

Old-timer? I can still clearly hear John Ferguson calling Brad Davis' touchdown catch.
I also remember Jim Hawthorne calling games for Northwestern St. with Norm Fletcher on KNOC radio in Natchitoches.

Best baseball guy we have as well... not sure why he doesn't get more air time in men's sports. Solid, great radio voice, and intelligent.

This.
Also ... I like Lynn Rollins as a person.
But if and when Jim hangs it up--voluntarily or involuntarily--no way in hell do I want to see Lynn Rollins as "The Voice of the Tigers."
Rollins would make a good radio broadcaster for Northwestern State or Nicholls State.
I'd love to hear Jim Henderson doing double-duty for LSU and the Saints.

Don't let the screen door hit him on the arse. I won't miss a bitter old man with a whinny voice who doesn't know what's going on in the game.
