I REALLY wish i could agree, but after several years noticing his degradation, the Auburn braodcast put me over the limit. He was just SO SO SO SO bad. Sure, he loves LSU, Sure he is a wonderful man. Sure, he has been the voice of the Tigers for a very long time.

BUT, he is SOOO bad that it over rides all the positive stuff.

He was clueless. One example is where Eric Ried clearly whalloped a Barner out of bounds, and he said something like..."I don't know what that call was, he just fell on top of the opponent".

I did not make a record, but watching it in person and listening, there were 5-6 just terrible calls by Jim.

Sorry. I am ready for someone else.

I hated to see Furgerson go in 79/80 also, but that cleared the way for Hawthorne, who was great for many a years. Furgerson had a much better voice also, but his time was over, so that was the right move.

The right move now is to replace Hawthorne at seasons end. Period.

For you people in love with Hawthorne, just count the times he has to go back and correct himself after he has wrongly anticipated what has just happened on the field.
Trying to follow what is happening on the field is like trying to work a verbal rubics cube.

Watch one ABC primetime game and see how many mistakes musberger makes. I am shocked herbie never corrects him but I guess he is trying to not embarass him. I have seen balls get fumbled and while players are scrambling for the ball musberger will say that brings up 2nd and long....its as if he doesn't even watch the game or just can't see it.

I truly think hate for hawthorne is all relative to the age of the listeners. The young ones think he sucks b/c of the Jack Hunt call. He has made MANY more great calls than bad ones.

If Hawthorne would just show a little patience, and let action play out on the field before he describes it, he would do just fine.

did someone just seriously try to defend JH by comparing him to Mussberger?

I hope both of them live long. In retirement. Starting now.

Lynn Rollins would be even worse, though. Is that your point? If so, it's a weak one. I'm sure LSU could find some serious talent to throw their names in the hat if an opening comes up.

Just watch a game musberger is doing and you will hear more mistakes than Hawthorne.

I wasn't comparing the 2 but I was saying Musberger makes more mistakes and he is said to be the best.

i honestly don't think many folks consider him to be the best anymore. At least I hope not. Probably the same folks who thought whoa-nellie Keith Jackson was still the best when he stayed on the air about 8 years too long.

Herbstreit carries Mushmouther, imo.

Where's Ron Franklin, btw?

Right. Jim is a great guy, but...

He's not that great if you are really interested in accurately being told how the final score was arrived at or who made the plays to get us there.

Jim does a poor job of conveying the information so that the listener can make a good mental image of the game that is taking place. When I'm force to listen to a game on the radio I find myself many times during the game saying, "wait, that doesn't make sense", "how long was that run", "what yard line are we on now", etc. I hate to be this critical but Jim leaves out or gets wrong too much basic information too many times. The last time I had to listen to the Tigers on the radio was the LSU/Arkansas game last year...that was a nightmare.

I guess I'm spoiled because I grew up listening to Jim Henderson call Saints games. Now that dude is a pro and I rather listen to Jim H. over the TV broadcast anytime. JMO though.

It is time for musberger to retire. I have watched 3 or 4 games he has done this year and I am just amazed ABC still allows him to do games.

What is the deal with these pbp guys? Lundquist sounds drunk and his laugh is terrible.

Hawthorne just seems to hate his job at times. He has got increasingly more negative as he has gotten older. I call it Grumpy Old Man Syndrome.

This is my major beef with JH. He's great when things are going well, but is the poster boy for "castastrophe syndrome" when things aren't and goes hyper-negative.

This is comical.

OK first, I love Hawthorne. He is the voice of the tigers. I'm willing to put up with his mistakes, because he can convey the excitement & intensity of the moment through the radio waves. If he can make me hang on every word he says during a very close ballgame, then that's what I want. That being said, he needs to give up basketball. The game moves entirely too fast for him. But I still want him in the booth for football and baseball. His comments during the slow parts of baseball games are hilarious.

Second, at everybody on here who says that Hanagriff is dull and boring and, but Patrick Wright is not. Gimme a break. They're both very similar. Wright has the better radio voice, but Hanagriff is SO detail oriented that he paints a clearer picture.

The biggest problem with Hanagriff is that he is so opinionated. I don't think the LSU Sports Radio Network wants that.

Ideally, this is what I would like:

Football: Hawthorne/Moreau/Rush
Basketball: Draw a couple of names out of the hat
Baseball: Hawthorne/Franquez/Hannagriff

Patrick Wright...the women's sports guy....seems like the logical choice. He is forgotten about because he does the women's stuff, but I have listened to him for a long time and he is solid.

Best baseball guy we have as well... not sure why he doesn't get more air time in men's sports. Solid, great radio voice, and intelligent.

He will fill in occasionally for men's basketball and baseball, but not much...I think when softball started back in the late 90's, he inherited that role as his main thing. I think he would do well as the main guy. I really would like to have an "LSU guy" and not some random person from God knows where who they bring in who knows nothing about LSU.

Also ... I like Lynn Rollins as a person.

Lynn's not a bad guy and would be an adequate play-by-play guy, with the right color man. However, Lynn is no spring chicken. LSU genereally gets a guy a little younger than that and keeps him for a while - Henderson 30 years and I thought that would be all, but we'll see.

Hannagriff would be knowledgeable and thorough, but dull. I like Gordy, but I don't know if I could hear him call the whole game, play-by-play. He's another guy I have a feeling who could grow into the role. I think he would be better as the color guy.

I just don't know of anybody associated with the program tha I would be excited about coming in.

Say what you want, but Jim makes the radio calls exciting.

ETA: Greg Bowser and even Hultberg could probably handle color commentary with the right play-by-play man.
