What to do about mother's cat.

Had to put my mother in a home. Her cat is 17 years old. and has been miserable for the several months she has been away. he is now peeing on things.
He is declawed so I can't keep him outside. He is mean as hell. My mother was his favorite and he tries to bite the rest of us if we try to pet him.
To put him down or not put him down? I don't think he will be happy in a shelter place. I can't take him as he hates my dog and would probably attack my much smaller cat .
So what is the OT's advice besides antifreeze?

Just go drop his mean arse off in the woods somewhere. He sounds like an a-hole

I had to put my cat down last week after she broke her hip fighting with another cat. I couldn’t pick her up to take her to the vet so I had to put her down myself. It’s a difficult thing to do.

This is your mother's cat that she loved. It is innocent and 17 years old. It doesn't understand what is happening to it.
If you love your mother, then you'll do what you can to love the things she loved. Work with a trainer and a vet to figure the situation out and care for it.

Tough one.
Some homes utilize pets to keep the old folks engaged and happy... ask your mom's place if they want it.

.22 bullet to the back of its grape. And i generally like cats. Have two inside/outside myself. But 17 is old and not going to have any quality of life and won't get adopted at a shelter.

How close is the nearest Asian restaurant?

17 years? I’m generally in favor of cats, but that’s like 100 in human years. Quality of life is not getting better from here. Put the poor SOB to sleep.

Unless your mother is utterly mentally not there, I would talk to her about it and follow her wishes, regardless of what they are, within reason.

Is “my mother’s cat” a clever euphemism for something?

Amen!
The cat will likely not last much longer, the oldest cat we've ever had lasted to 19. Most pass in the 15-17 year old range.

From a recently arrived cat fancier I would have it put down. It is 17 years old, it is not going to get better its going to get worse. It is confused and frightened and its going to continue to be both....its the humane thing to do.

Then don't pet the cat
