I was at my 12 yr olds Volleyball tournament this weekend and I really enjoy watching her play a sport she loves. With that said, am I the only person who has to constantly talk to themselves and say "it's just a game this does not matter in the grand scheme"

I've watched the crazy videos in youth sports, and I am no where near those levels of insanity but I do get irrationally angry at missed calls, kids who make mistakes, etc etc.

I don't act out on these feelings but it's almost the feeling of watching LSU against Bama.

Try to refocus your energy on the effort your kid is putting in, how they treat their teammates/opponents, how they respond to their coaches, etc.

It’s not that the result of the game doesn’t matter; its that the result of the game matters far, far less than any of the above.

I can tell you this much, I had 2 kids I coached where the parents told me they either were moving on because their kid was better, or wanted to get better kids to replace some of the current kids. Only to see the first get labeled by the second as not good enough, then the second not to finish HS ball. That's the short version, the first ones looked down on others, only to have another look down on them later.

The moral of the story is worry about your kid enjoying the little bit of time they have as a kid and enjoy it.

Prepubescent sports is a killer for parents who have never been exposed to competitive HS sports either as an observer, or as a parent. They will believe a bracket game in a 12U tournament is a make or break for their kid's future success.

You have to always remember and remind yourself that the officials/referees/umpires are not even high school level. They make mistakes and miss calls often.

I keep the focus on my kid's effort and performance. Volunteer refs across all sports make bad calls regularly. Other kids are not reliable, may be great one game and completely distracted another. I don't let my younger kids complain about refs or teammates. With my older son, I'll let him vent a little, but bring it back around to what can be done to overcome that. I also try to tie it back to real life and having to overcome unfair situations and working with people that put in different levels of effort.

We must be on the same volleyball circuit. I get frustrated sometimes, but I don't put my self-worth in the outcome of a child's game. If I do, my kid might do the same thing. If you've so far kept your thoughts to yourself, good for you.

Some people need a break. No grown adult should be bad-mouthing a child line judge bc they don't like the (in my specific example, correct) call. This is not the Olympic trials. If it was, by all means nauseate yourself being nervous. At this point, use it as an opportunity to teach your kid to overcome whatever went wrong.

Everybody should umpire or referee one season of any sport. It really changes your perspective. It’s would be easier to umpire an MLB game with crisp plays than 10 year olds where everyone is bobbling the ball and bouncing it to first base.

Agreed. For one, nobody is perfect, including umps and refs. Also, a ref only has one set of eyes so there will things they miss simply bc they can’t look 100 different places at once.

Were you at Cathlic High in The Berry? If so, I was there with my 12 year old too.

What about the lady who has to make the game about herself? Every travel is a production and everything is a huge show when they have to make a call.

There are bad apples everywhere in every aspect of life.

My daughter played tball which I was excited. I love baseball so I figured she’d fall in love with it too. Long story short, between the screaming parents and her mom getting mad if she ran the wrong way or didn’t run fast enough upset her to the point of crying . I’d walk to the dug out tell her she’s doing great. After the year she said can we just practice ? That’s what we do now. Been 3 years.

Once you accept that they are mostly volunteers or individuals getting paid very little, and without them your kids would not be able to play sports, it gets easier.

I still have kids in sports. I'll be honest, I've never gotten mad at shite watching a youth sports game. As long as my kids put in a lot of effort and treat everyone good, I'm good. If I cared that much about blown calls, I'd be out there refereeing or umpiring. If the coach doesn't feel my kid is good enough to play, then my kid needs to improve. Just how I've always looked at it.

Youth sports is difficult to navigate. I'm glad my kid participated and it gave us an opportunity to take a lot of trips and spend time together. That being said, I sat in gyms a lot thinking to myself "no one outside of this building gives a shite." I still feel that way. Enjoy the time, but most of our kids aren't going D1.

You have to do them with your kids to teach them sportsmanship and teamwork. But man does a lot of it suck as a parent these days.

I've seen the refs at volleyball tournaments have parents removed from the gym. Sometimes warranted, often times not.

I mean even spazzing over any game is crazy. Even high school games are hard to enjoy now with all the parents that think they would be better coaches/refs. It’s gotta be embarrassing to have you parents screaming from the bleachers. Just enjoy the games and if little Johnny makes it to the pros great if not it’ll be okay.
