I saw a tow truck tow an AWD/ft4x4 today and wondered. Are they responsible for damage?

I saw an suv that is full time four wheel drive get dragged out a spot earlier and pulled down the street with the tires chirping. And I wonder. Yeah it's on you to legally park. But you can really wreck the differential on a full time 4x4 or awd car towing it by pulling two wheels and leaving two down.
If the tow company or in this case the city of nola destroy your drive train are you liable?

Way back in 2005 I was staying at a friend's after losing my house in katrina. I was towed by Riverside. $260 later I was driving home and my back right tire snapped off at 60mph in the interstate. I still to this day think it's because it was dragged out the spot and that was the wheel that was locked up in park.
I didn't pursue anything.

They have a pretty good complaint program. You call them up and tell them the issue and then they offer to fight you in their parking lot at night.

Generally, yes. Tow companies are responsible for damage they cause to vehicles during a tow.

Saw a tow truck driver the other day who was towing a AWD Volvo suv out of a neighborhood.

He had the back wheels on the ground but the front wheels were spinning on the rack.

The driver pulls over near where I was at to see what the noise was. I say hey man, the front wheels are spinning, the drivetrain gotta be disengaged.

Anyway the driver didin't speaka. he no-sed, shrugged and got back in the cab and tore off down the road.

No doubt burned up the entire drivetrain.

Some soccer mommy's brand new Volvo donezo.

I've always wondered that myself.

I remember seeing an illegally parked car get towed by a rollback flatbed wrecker once, and the winch cable busted the plastic air dam on the front of the car - just sawed right through it.

Years ago we had a an ongoing fight with the Nazi tow trucks when I lived in apartments.

Everyone would come home drunk and park all over, they got me once and busted my side window.

I raised hell to no avail, most signs in parking lots indicate “Not Responsible For Damage From Towing “.

Legally they are responsible. Will they actually pay for the damage? Probably not.

Those predatory tow companies can pretty much do whatever they want and you just have to deal with it if you want your car back

And yeah that 100% happened because riverside screwed up your truck towing it

don’t forget the police officer glaring at you just daring you to say anything or to fight back

That place was truly the most vile business I’ve ever had to deal with

How many of you that have been wronged by Riverside have tossed bricks down on them from the bridge? I would love to be on the levee videoing the landings.

I might be the only person in LA who Riverside has actually helped. Drunk girl T boned us one night in college and left the scene/returned later so no proving she was drunk at the time of wreck. Riverside driver watched it happen and hung around for 2 hours waiting for the cops to confirm our side of the story that she didn’t have lights on when we pulled out.

A couple pipe bombs attached to a drone would be a better solution.

Just sayin

The mechanic or body man will prove it and the attorney will make sure they pay it.

If this were true I’ll pitch in the pay an MMA fighter to get their car towed on purpose.

Years ago a City of New Orleans tow truck towed my one year old Camaro in the French Quarter. They tore the front bumper practically off the car. I filed a complaint, with pics, and the city paid for it to get fixed.

Tow truck drivers in cities are some of the lowest forms of humans that exist. Absolute scum.
