A big role in it.

U.S. employers announced 108,435 layoffs for the month, up 118% from the same period a year ago and 205% from December 2025. The total marked the highest for any January since 2009.
At the same time, companies announced just 5,306 new hires, also the lowest January since 2009, which is when Challenger, Gray & Christmas began tracking such data.

It's real. Home Depot just laid off 800 corporate workers.

How do these layoffs affect the office real estate market. So many large towers in downtowns across the US and so many vacancies.
Not to mention all the work from home and hybrid jobs that are more common than ever before.

Good. I know my company could trim some fat. Too many people with made up jobs, who sit on Teams calls all day.

I just started playing the Cyberpunk 2077 game and it doesn't seem that far off from what we appear to be heading toward from a social and economic standpoint.

During my career, my position was held be only a handful of people in our company. We used to always laugh when some random person that none of us had ever met showed up on calls or in meetings!

Home Depot
Not only that but making it mandatory to work from office 3 or 4 days a week depending on department.

Man, yall just throwing AI anywhere it fits.
AI is still shite.
How do I know, I actually am involved in the rollout at the company im employed by.
The amount of times you have to correct the system or get full hallucinations is still at the point on unreliability.
Sure, it can pull data, but as far as doing a job accurately, no.
The people that are being told to use it still have to go behind it and confirm the results are correct.
Hell, I have to tell AI the code it provides has errors.
Will it get there? Yes, but not in the next 5 years.

My favorite is when you can hear their little dog or kid running around in the background.

Remodel and reimagine. Lots of opportunity

If they can learn a new trade we could fill all the need for electricians, plumbers, welders, etc.

Damn. I was planning on retiring in a year then just working at Home Depot or Bass Pro a couple days a week just being the old guy walking around talking shop. Not sure AI can replace that guy.

We’ll all just be welders and plumbers and work for ?
