Needing a Christmas gift idea for my dad. He just retired this past year and about all he does now is work out in the yard/garden.
So anything obscure that you’ve actually found useful?
(In before Lane Kiffin and Hoe joke)

Get him a bush hog. So much fun.
Or one of those water hoses that shrink.

Hoes, of course. But seriously, a nicer hose reel on wheels might be a good gift.

Old guys do not appreciate such a thing.
They also don't hold up well over time. Mine started to bulge near the valve connector when connected to hose accessories. The only way to prevent it from bursting was to grip it tightly. That got old quick.

Felco pruners
One of the few absolutes in my household is that nobody messes with my Felco F-5.

I was gonna say a "Hook and Crook" hoe but they're all out of stock. LINK

Felco pruners are pretty nice but Okatsune is the goat. Japanese hand tools are superior and their steel is amazing. I pair them with a Felco leather pouch. (It looks like AM Leonard is sold out of the larger size)

a good shovel. Not a home depot shovel but a good, long handle flat spearhead shovel. A joy to use and makes quick work of trenching and digging
hori hori knife as mentioned above
a long handled hay fork…ideal for turning compost pile, distributing mulch, spreading hay for ground cover, scooping up pine straw, turning over garden beds, etc

This is the best thing I've bought for yardwork in a long time. It is one of those, "Where the hell has this been for my whole life?" deals.
Cuts great and the battery lasts quite a while on a charge.

Can you even buy a good shovel brand new anymore?
Both of my "good" shovels are older than I am. They get cleaned and a coat of oil the same day of use . A shiny shovel is a joy to use compared to a rusty one.

Can’t say it’s my favorite but something I’ve bought recently that I’ve used several times and really like it is a root cutting shovel.
At my farm and house I have enough trees where roots are an issue but that thing slices through them pretty easily.
I also have a kobalt battery powered pole saw that you can use without the middle pole section. That thing is great.
