Danielle Gansky was 7 years old when an administrator at her upscale private girls’ school in suburban Philadelphia flagged problems with her academic performance. She was a bubbly and creative kid, but she was easily distracted in class and her schoolwork was sloppy.

There is nothing wrong with being easily distracted with sloppy schoolwork at 7.

That still described me at 21

quote:

The school told Gansky’s mother that the girl should see a psychiatrist, who diagnosed her with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, and prescribed a stimulant. Concerned that Danielle might get kicked out if her focus didn’t improve, her mother broke into tears and agreed. But the pills made Gansky agitated, moody and angry. So another doctor put her on Prozac.

Or else...

quote:

More pills followed. Over the years, Gansky was always on two and sometimes three or more psychiatric drugs at once. By her late 20s, she had taken 14 different kinds of psychiatric pills.

We spend so much time trying to balance people's chemistry that we often wind up far worse than nature would have had it.

Kids eventually grow up, let kids be kids.
Worth a read.

Wasn't the story I thought I'd be clicking on- was definitely the story that needs telling.

Tucker has a recent interview with a psychologist that promoted "brain health". Very interesting. He scans brains and can tell toxicity, and works with people on how how to help themselves. Very good interview cause he talks about kids like this in the OP.

Though the legalize folks won't like it cause he talks about how bad weed is for your brain. Especially when people start young.

This why they fear MAHA and RFK Jr. His opinion isn't wanted and there's no need to give the public 'misinformation' about their very profitable industry.

The whole putting kids on speed thing is ridiculous. They can’t pay attention because they’re kids, have tons of energy, don’t have enough recess or PE or after school activities to burn it off, and school starts too damned early

Wait, the child was hyperactive so they prescribed stimulants?????

Parents arent "concerned" in many cases they just want to turn their kid into a zombie so they arent bothered.

And turning the kid into "special" they and the school get federal funding.

You wonder why we have a "spectrum of autism" and now, what is it up to, 4 kids have autism for every normal child???

Stop funding what you dont want to see, and magically it goes away.

Yeah we give kids legal meth.

The only difference is in pill form it gives you smaller hits over a period of time while smoking it is one big hit at once.

What do you think alcohol does to a brain? You don’t even have to be young.

I know it seems counterintuitive, but a psychologist friend informed me several years ago that “stimulant” refers not to the effect the drug has on the person’s behavior, but rather the effect it has on the body. I don’t remember the specific terminology, but Ritalin, for example, actually “stimulates” production of brain chemicals which calm the kid down. He also added that Ritalin is terribly over-prescribed, and is too often used to mask poor parenting, rather than healing a bonafide medical condition.

Hell people will put their dogs on anti-depressants.

Docs will push any drug that pays the bills.

Big pharm owns all med schools.

they wanted to diagnose me with ADD when i was a kid so that they could put me on meds, but thankfully my dad denied that and understood that i was a kid. lots of kids out there doped up on meds when they shouldn't be. the school system is broken in many ways and one of those broken ways is trying to make a 7 year old sit still in a desk for long periods of time and expecting them to be angels the whole time.

My daughter was at a daycare (pre-k) they told her mom she needed medicine because of anxiety. Luckily I found out and with my family in the mental health field for 40 plus years called her and the school on it. I found out the director advocates for medication because entire family is taking something.

The highest-IQ individual I've ever known in my life was a habitual smoker for decades. Guy has encyclopedic knowledge and skill with boilers, turbines, electricity and PLC. He's got a MENSA ring and he's not just the typical "book smart" brainiac because he's got far more common sense than most people.

When "medical" weed became legal in OK, he kinda became disinterested because he thinks it was just more of a rebellious thing and habit than something he really wanted to do. He quit smoking altogether four years ago and says that his mind now works faster than ever before and his memory has vastly improved.

I don't have a problem with smokers or legalization advocates at all. I haven't done it myself since the 90s but more power to you if that's your thing. I drink, and it's arguably far more unhealthy than smoking weed, so I don't judge. But we can't just pretend that pot is completely without side effects, especially long term.

We look so hard for “problems” that need to be “fixed” that we forget about simple individuality and normal differences being often not just ok but great

This not limited to children but all kinds of topics

The biggest problem is parents (or whoever is "raising" the kids) looking for a disability rating, which leads to a govt handout.

It's a known graft.

So the exception proves the rule.
It’s the person who claims that smoking cigarettes isnt bad for you because they know someone who smoked and love to be 100.
