Youth sports (overall Importance)?

How important in the long run are youth sports to kids development and long term success in life.
Example, is spending thousands of dollars on training, tournaments, etc worth the investment if it means your kid could be a certain % better?
Does them being better at sports open up other avenues in their life whether it be confidence, making connections, general health, etc
There is probably a trade off at some point. There is definitely value to kids playing sports and excelling, just not sure at what point it becomes more of a net negative with the costs and time people invest in it.

I say zero. I know lots of people that never played sports that are extremely successful. I know lots of losers that put way too much emphasis on sports.

If Bradyn doesn’t have Tommy John by age 12, he is lowering his future earnings potential dramatically

Jaxxxxton is going to the show buddy. His coach just needs one more $5k check buddy.

quote:Prob depends on the kid. I had one that would have been successful with or without sports, and my middle kid needed some sort of motivation to do ok in school so she could continue to dance. Landed herself on a D1 school dance team so for her it was important I would say. They both met friends that have been friends their whole lives too from that activity in their lives. They learned discipline, time management and other skills I think helped them as they got older. But again it is dependent on the kid. I can't stand BR and the sports parents...they ruin it all.

the amount of money most people spend on travel ball and put their self in debt for is about as dumb as it can be, 99% will never even make it to a college team so it really is a waste of money, alot of it is the parents ego or just to say my kid is in travel ball

If the kid really wants to do it…support him.
Just don’t force him to do it because you’re a “everyone has to play a sport” type.

I believe there are certain strengths that are enhanced by youth sports that would help a person later in life. Strengths like resilience, confidence, teamwork, discipline, etc. are a few examples. Those strengths can also be developed through other vehicles.
There have been numerous academic studies on developmental aspects of sports that can be applicable in a business career. Unfortunately many former athletes struggle to connect these dots. Junior Bridgeman and Roger Staubach are two examples that went beyond leveraging their fame to develop great business acumen.

Several of my sons made lifelong friends through sports. Also, the discipline aspect of sports works for life goals as well

The YMCA type team sports are all kids need. One practice a week, one game, season lasts 2-3 months.
Anything more is a colossal waste of time and money. Parents are stealing their kids childhoods doing all this travel league bullshite.

Athletes are going to be athletes.. the training absolutely helps development. That doesn’t mean breaking the bank but the more you train, the more likely you will reach potential.
Confidence can absolutely increase with ability, on the field and off.. it will help your child develop friendships and push their social comfort levels.
Play all the sports they are willing to try.. focus on being athletic over specialized skills at the youth level as they find where they fit..

I feel the youth travel baseball (8-12) is a scam and a monopoly. Keep young family's poor and only like 12% of the kids will play at a higher level.

This is what we do with our son. He gets one sport per season of his choice. And we will not sign up for a travel league of any sorts. We have offered to pay for my son to have extra batting practice one on one if he wanted help with hitting, but thats it. And he said no anyways.

Depends on the kid.
One loved all sports and thrived in soccer and baseball.
The other hared it and wanted to play music. Enjoyed the band.
It's important for them to do something and find something they love.
And fish.

Children playing sports is a great thing, "youth sports" in its current state in suburban America are a terrible thing for most kids and families. It's such a shame and sham

No. Most of my teammates from grade school baseball all paid for extra training, played travel ball, etc. I was not into that and ended up playing American Legion until 7th grade and enjoyed it. The one and only guy from our grade school team who ended up starting on our HS's state championship team was always stuck in the outfield with me growing up and played rec ball his whole life.
