Poll: Six-figure earners feel they’re in ‘survival mode’

Feeling financially secure in the U.S. is all about perspective, a new survey from The Harris Poll suggests.
Nearly one-third of respondents earning six figures described themselves as financially distressed, while two-thirds in the high-earning group said they don’t consider themselves wealthy.
For the “Income Paradox Survey,” more than 2,100 Americans were queried over the summer, including 728 Americans who make $100,000 or more annually and 280 who make at least $200,000 a year.
Members of the six-figure earning class tended to agree they’re in “survival mode,” and they are more likely to put everyday expenses on a credit card when cash is tight, according to poll results; 44 percent indicated they feel one unexpected bill away from “financial chaos.”
Why such negativity from people perceived as being fairly well off? Analysts offer a variety of explanations, including an obvious one: Someone making a six-figure income in New York City might conceivably struggle compared to one of their counterparts in middle America.
Also, inflation has taken a toll. Comerica Bank chief economist Bill Adams tells USA Today that someone must make $175,000 today to match the purchasing power of that salary 20 years ago.

Gee, could it be that earning 100-200k/yr is now only worth half that in spending power ?
Inflation is a bitch.

If someone has been a working adult for a while and feels like this, they need to look in the mirror.
People don’t save money outside retirement (if they do that). Having 10k (at least) in cash available for an emergency isn’t hard to accomplish over a few years or less. 10k solves most issues.

That ACA marketplace will cost you 40k per year for a SBO and family.

It would help to refuse to pay $2200/month for a 2 bedroom apt., and leave the $75,000 trucks on the lot at the dealership. Living below your means builds savings. Living above them builds articles about making good money, but feeling minutes from being fooked.

There is a whole Reddit group with people saying they’re new to Atlanta and looking for an apartment under $2000/mo. The average response is “good luck”.

I get the truck part, but how do you “refuse to pay $XXX” in rent. The price is the price.

It has absolutely nothing to do with perspective. It's all about spending less than you earn. A large percentage of people simply refuse to exercise any degree of financial discipline. They get a raise at work and immediately find something shiny they can't live without.

Making money does not always go hand-in-hand with managing money.
This was true of Kings & Emperors in history.
Possible agenda for this story is to enlist the $100k - &200ks against the oligarchs.

Childcare is way higher than that. Almost double until you get them into grade school. Then it’s not the childcare but the sports. And juggling your time to get them there.

Unless you went from a low skilled position to some six figure manager position at your store, there’s a lot of hidden costs to making over six figs.

If making 6fig and are struggling to make ends meet, you are bad at managing money, let me be clear, full stop, end of discussion, period

That's not even that expensive these days for a 2 BR apartment

Yes. It's more difficult to live below your means when costs increase far faster than wages.
And if everyone went all Dave Ramsey and beans and rice mode the entire fricking economy would collapse anyway

I pay 15k a year for health insurance so your fat disabled neighbors and illegals get free Healthcare.
Im not in survival mode, im in F you mode.

Making 100k a year is vastly different from making over $200k a year.

Yep
Even making 160 a year is vastly different than 100 a year

- $2,400.00 mortgage
- $1,000.00 car loans/maintenance/Car Insurance
- $300.00 Electric
- $150.00 TV< INTERNET, Subscriptions etc
-150.00 for “stuff”
Leaves $2,390.00 "a month" for food and entertainment, ain't nobody starving on that.
Unless you are talking about living in NYC or equivalent, then those people have a spending problem.
Perhaps put down the daily Starbucks, cancel DoorDash, cook for yourself, and drive a used car.
