50 years ago, on this day in history, Nov.10 1975, 29 men lost their lives aboard the Edmund Fitzgerald in Lake Superior. This is a great tribute video to them. May they rest in peace....

Just heard a great story about them on NPR. Apparently the ship had to be skinny to fit through the locks. Like the distance from home plate to first base. That is no good for large waves on the Great Lakes. And people would line up a whole day just to get a glimpse.

By and large people don't grasp how large those lakes are.

Lake Pontchartrain is about 650 or so square miles and 65 feet deep at its deepest part.

Lake Superior is about 31,000 square miles and over 1300 feet deep at it's deepest.

Does anyone know where the love of God goes when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

I used to scuba dive shipwrecks w/Dick Race in the great lakes. Never dove this one however…Mr Race made a living recovering ship (laker’s)anchors for owners when they got stuck. He dove the Fitz for the insurance companies. He concluded the Fitz got off course and scraped the bottom. The USCG had changed aids for navigation from manned to automatic and Whitefish went off line in the storm. The grounding wouldn’t be felt by the Capt & Crew any more than a tractor trailer feeling a glass bottle they may drive over and damage a rear tire.
Rest in Peace fellow mariners. A

More like 19 feet deep, right?

Rest in Peace, crew of the Big Fitz.
And Gordon Lightfoot too... responsible for, perhaps, the greatest lyric in the history of modern music.

You are more correct than the earlier poster.

The scours by where the Industrial Canal, Chef Pass & the Rigolets intersect are deeper than that but generally the entire lake is under 20’ of depth.

As in 99.99% of the lake is less than 20’ deep.

Makes for short, abrupt wave periods.

Phenomenal song.

The wind in the wires made a tattletale sound as the waves broke over the railing

The wreck is in Canadian waters in about 525 feet of water. The Canadians passed a law declaring the wreck site a grave site and that forbids the diving on the wreck. This law passed after it was discovered that a body of one of the crew was located outside of the wreck on the bottom. Because of the temperature of the water and lack of oxygen in the water very little if any decomposition occurs. IIRC none of the crews family members wanted the body recovered, preferring that he remain with his shipmates,

RIP crew,

Chalk another one up for NPR garbage. All great lakes ships have to fit through the locks. All of them. A huge part of the trade is iron ore coming from Duluth to the steel mills in Gary, Cleveland, etc... If they're not carring Minnesota Iron Ore they're likely carrying cargo to smaller river terminals and again have to be narrow.

Imagine America's luck. Europeans stumbled on a fertile land the size of Europe, with giant inland oceans, powerful rivers, multiple coasts with sea access, and no network of established stupid little kingdoms. The enormous continent was lightly inhabited by nomadic savages with little concept of land ownership and they were about 10 to 20 centuries behind in technology.

I was in this boat (excuse the pun) 100%. It’s just a lake right?!?

Just look at a map of the US. Put your thumb over Lake Superior for a reference. Then put your thumb over Louisiana…. Those lakes are monstrous
