Have you ever been and I would be grateful if you could share your “must do’s”. Thanks

Yes. Visit the beaches and take in the history. It is really quite moving walking in the area and visualizing what went down.

WW2 wasn’t real.
It was staged so politicians could pocket war bond money.

Go at low tide to the beaches. Walk all the way to the waters edge without looking back. When you hit the water edge turn and look. It's powerful to see what they saw that day.
Also the cemetery is a must. Along with museum in deadmans corner

Yes, spend a day or so in Bayeux. Charming town.
If you are able to book a guide- I highly recommend it. We used Overlord Tours and it was incredible. There is a lot more than the beaches. We visited small towns where battles occurred and saw tons of history and the guide did a great job of explaining what happened in each location.

I haven't been but my great-uncle was.
He gives it 0/5 stars - would not recommend.
Seriously though, I would love to visit there one day. I would like to visit Normandy, places in the Netherlands where Market Garden occurred, go through the Ardennes into Germany, and make my way down to Bavaria.

I’m assuming you are going to Omaha Beach.
Just seeing the cemetery there with the thousands of young men who gave their lives for our freedom was an emotional experience for me

Obviously go to the American cemetery. I was there at noon, and they played "How Great Thou Art" with church bells. Everyone stopped and soaked in the moment. The Utah Beach Museum is good, as is the museum at the American cemetery. The Caen Memorial is worth seeing. Pointe du Hoc is right on Omaha Beach, and you can see the German positions. The Airborne Museum is another good one but not near the beach. Lots to see.

Recommend this as well.
The American Cemetery is a must see.
There is a cool place just off the beach called Le Rooesevelt. We had lunch and a few beers there.
Also bring ziplocks and take some sand back for when you go to the beachs.

My FIL landed at Pointe du Hoc with the 2nd Rangers, and climbed those cliffs. He also fought in 4 other major battles including Hedgerows and the Bulge. He revisited Omaha Beach on 50th anniversary and he did not discuss his experiences until about 2 weeks before he died. We were shocked at what he told us. We had no idea. He never saw the movie “Saving Private Ryan”.
It should be a great experience for you. Please post here after your visit.
