That's what's kind of scaring me about Livingston. That's the reason it is more affordable. Conroe being so closed to Houston makes me a little hesitant. I'll start checking on Limestone and the Bois one. Hadn't researched in those areas. I kind of like the Tyler area because it is not too big, far enough from Dallas to not be invaded on the weekend like Conroe and Houstonians.

East Texas Lakes

I'm planning on retiring in the next two years. I'm thinking about moving to an East Texas lake. I have a daughter in Ft. Worth and one moving to Houston area. Right now, Lake Palestine seems to be the frontrunner, but I'm looking at several others such as Livingston, Conroe, Lake Worth (kinda small) and some others. I'm trying to find something on the water with a boathouse so I can just drop the boat when I want to go fishing for a quick trip. I liked this setup when my Dad had a place on Toledo Bend. Rayburn doesn't have docks so that is a strike against it. I would primarily bass and sac-a-lait fish but might get into some catfish for frying. Of course, boathouses add about $100-150,000 to the real estate, but that is pay for play. I probably can't go more than $700,000, and I can't get the wife to stay in a "camp style home." I would like it to be closer to $550-600,000. So, I'm open to suggestions to places that are decent and the fishing is also pretty good. I don't think I could get a place at Fork based on those numbers and enough quality for the wife to agree.

Obviously go to the American cemetery. I was there at noon, and they played "How Great Thou Art" with church bells. Everyone stopped and soaked in the moment. The Utah Beach Museum is good, as is the museum at the American cemetery. The Caen Memorial is worth seeing. Pointe du Hoc is right on Omaha Beach, and you can see the German positions. The Airborne Museum is another good one but not near the beach. Lots to see.

Tripmasters has been really good for us, but I simply may not know better. French went on strike for some reason, and the pilots wanted to show their solidarity and struck for one day. The day we were supposed to fly from Venice to Paris. Called Tripmasters, and they rearranged our schedule and we got to Paris three hours later than originally scheduled. No cost incurred. We had an extremely complicated trip reschedule from Pamplona back to the states, and they were extremely helpful. Like I said, I may not know better, but all the places we stayed so far have been great.

I plugged in some dates on Tripmasters. I don't remember the exact dates, but I believe it was leaving Dec. 26 from DFW to Queenstown on Dec. 28. I know two days, but it was leaving late afternoon on the 26th and getting there early on the 28th. They did have some flight selections. Ironically, the flights left DFW and went through Houston. I'm closer to Houston (daughter lives in Ft. Worth, so plan was Christmas with her and maybe cheaper flights from there.) Now may just drive to Houston. It looks like Houston is the connection even if I book through New Orleans or BTR. Come back around Jan. 8.
Costco v. Tripmasters

Four of us are thinking about going to New Zealand end of Dec.-early January, about 10 days. We have used Tripmasters for booking rooms and airfare for several European trips (Spain, Italy, France, Croatia and Greece). I've been pleased with Tripmasters. I've heard some people speak complimentary of Costco travel, but I know nothing about their travel options other than decent car rental rates. I'm not even a Costco member. So to the experienced traveler, is Costco worth looking into? At worst, I have a membership in Costco for a year.
Ironically, the second Cotton Bowl in Jerry’s World was LSU v a&m, won by the good guys 41-24 in 2011.
Concert at Red Rocks

Don't know whether this would be travel or music board but I'm putting it here. Anybody been to a concert there? I've been to the venue but not a show. Going to see Whiskey Meyers in June and have reserved seats. Staying in Littleton, approximately nine miles away. It says show starts at 6:30 p.m. What is the parking situation? About what time to arrive? I know there will be a massive amount of "smoke" in the air since it is Colorado. Any other "helpful' suggestions?
I don't know the last concert I went to. Must be at least 20 years. I think Jimmy Buffett in New Orleans the day before the Super Bowl when Montana and Rice beat the Broncos 55-10. Me and wife going to see Whiskey Myers at Red Rocks in June for anniversary. Looking forward to it.

I think it was LSUintheNW that recommended Sparrow Bakery. Enjoyed my two visits there. The one in the market area is a lot better than the one by the railroad tracks. I didn't do a lot in Sisters per se, but Black Butte Ranch was nice in the area. I'm sure if I would have spent more time in the Bend area I would have found more things to do. It felt like 104 in LA, so that 39 degrees in Sisters felt really good. Sisters definitely ain't no Breckenridge or Vail.
Small town. About 2,500 people. Its a tourist town, so it has grocery stores, liquor store, everything you really need. The pizza at the Hop and Brew was good. We got in around 6 p.m. Sunday and didn't feel like cooking. There are hiking opportunities in the area. We climbed to top of Black Butte. That was a 5-miler round trip. That was the only hike we did in the area. There are some others. It is around 4,000 feet elevation, but it was cool. Black Butte is around 6,700 and it was even cooler up there. It does have a few hotels in the area. In Oregon, you have to have your gas pumped. That was weird to me. It's not super developed, but it has what you need. Bend is only 30 minutes away if you are looking for more dining opportunities. Somebody on the board suggested Sparrow Bakery in Bend.That was good. On our last full day, we stopped at the bakery in Sisters, and it was very good also. I would go back. Picture of the Sisters taken from top of Black Butte. LINK
I was at Black Butte Ranch from July 12-July 18, about 2.5 hours southeast of Portland. Flew into Portland and got out. It was akin to if all the mess was in the French Quarter, I flew to the NOLA airport and immediately drove to Alexandria. I had a conference call 7 a.m. local time, and it was 39 degrees in Sisters. We would spend one day hiking and biking within the area and did three road trips. One to Crater Lake National Park (no limitations except if you are not staying in the Lodge, you can't go in). Crater Lake is awesome. Also did the Painted Hills. Very unique. Nothing like the wackiness going on in Portland. We went into Bend several times. The first day to get groceries, another day we just drive through going to Crater and did lunch at Monkless. Pretend you didn't see the article. I think the people want your business but might verbalize something else.

Drove straight through from Salt Lake to Lanana Creek on Toledo Bend. Had bed sores by the time I got there. Planned on stopping between Wichita Falls and Dallas but was wide awake. Decided I would go a little further. Once I got on the other side of Dallas got tired but was too close to my own bed and pushed through. Nearly 1,500 miles. My record is Baton Rouge to Green River, Wyoming (1,565) Young and dumb then. First time I tried 5-Hour energy drinks.

If you do make it to Yellowstone area, if you are headed back and went through Idaho and that route going, coming back down through Pinedale and Lander Wyoming is kinda of neat. South Pass City is about a 90 minute stop to check out. IF you continue south towards Rock Springs down 191, it's high desert country. One of the largest concentrations of wild horses in the country. I'm not sure the Salt Lake to Yellowstone route takes you through the Star Valley/Afton/Alpine Wyoming area or not. That is a real pretty area. The Wind River Range is pretty. Pinedale on one side (west) and Lander on the other. Gannett Peak is actually about 15 feet higher than the Grand Teton and highest point in Wyoming. I like to see the postcard places, but I try to venture out and find some hidden gems out there that aren't high traffic tourist areas.
I'm with several of the posters. Kids may be excited about Vegas, but will they understand. It will also be really hot. Vegas is really for adults, although they do have some things catered to kids. Your wife will enjoy it so much more as adults only. Someone mentioned rafting on the Arkansas. We did it near Buena Vista, CO, and we had a great time. But I don't know about a three-year old. That could complicate thngs.
Santa Fe, Denver, Cheyenne, Lincoln, Topeka, OKC. I'm not sure about Lincoln.
