In the market for a new waterfowl shotgun. What do you like?

Hi OB, Need your help please, with shotgun recs for a new duck gun. I'm open to all brands, and open to 12,16 or 20 gauges. Would appreciate any recs on guns you like and why, and any to stay away from. Also, would bass pro be a good place to check out new guns? Thanks!!

Plenty of good guns out there, but I’d recommend a 3.5” 12 gauge whatever you choose.
And full transparency, I don’t own a 3.5" 12 but do have a 10 gauge for waterfowl hunting.

I have a SX4 3.5”. I love it. Never failed me and you can get one for less than $1K.

3 Bs.
Browning, Beretta, Benelli
All of those have shims to fit the gun to you.
Go to a store and handle them and pick the one you like.

Second this. Also, may be in the minority, but I've never wished I had 3.5" shells from BWT to Sandhills, never needed.

Pretty flexible on budget

Helpful. I didn’t think of going to the store to try them. Greta idea, in the BR area, which stores will have the biggest selection?

Benneli super black eagle. Inertia driven eats shells no matter how dirty the gun gets. If on a budget franchi affinity.

I second this. I shoot a SBE3 and my dad has the SBE2. Guns have ever let us down. Cycle everytime no matter! They also cycle low brass with no issues. I would get a 3.5” gun just incase u ever get to go on a hunt where u need 3.5. Also go 28” barrel.
For chokes we shoot kicks high flyers. The rob Roberts chokes are killer too!
My back up gun is a gen 1 Browning Maxus

From rice fields to flooded green timber and everything else in between, with the onset of high quality nontoxic shot, I haven't shot a 12 gauge at ducks and geese in almost 15 years, nor turkeys.
20 Guage all the way for me, never a complaint or wished I had more.
Other than it being some known pos, the only acceptable answer is go shoulder as many as you can and check out its feel and swing and ergonomics. You likely won't go wrong with any of the 3 Bs, but there are many other manufacturers who make quality shotguns too.

What’s your budget and what type of birds do you plan on hunting? Fit is also extremely important so definitely make plans to shoulder a few.

Broken record time, get a B gun that fits YOU, 28" barrel minimum, i like 30 for the swing. 3.5 is very overrated. I hunt giant canadas a lot and 3" bbs or 2s are lots. With bismuth lots of guides shoot 20s. If money is tight could go w a franchi. Other options are benelli m3 or beretta 300, they are 3" guns. My favorite duck gun is my 391, almost 25 yrs.old and points like a dream. Had to change a recoil spring last year otherwise no issues

Unless you hunt in extreme cold, a Benelli SBE variant.
If you hunt in extreme cold, be prepared for the "Benelli click" (failure to fire).

I have a buddy that guides for ducks and he says Beretta A300/A400 and the Winchester SX? are the guns that hang up the least. I’ve shot the A300 and that gun has a great feel and I’m a lifelong Browning man.

Benelli click is when the bolt slightly rotates out of battery.
It can happen at any temperature.
If it’s happening to you in cold weather, it’s probably because you are cleaning the gun with a thick oil that gets gummy in cold temps.
Use a dry lube like hornady and temperature is pretty much irrelevant. The gun will shoot every time.

I'm aware of what it is and no, it's not always a cleaning/lube issue.
I shot an SBE/SBEII for 30+ hunts a year for many years. It's my gun of choice, despite having lost more than a few ducks to the click.
