And was it ever really funny in the first place? I saw a replay of the very first show from 50 years ago, and I didn't find it funny in the least. Maybe it seemed funnier in the context of what was happening in the news 50 years ago, but IDK.

Really, they're probably doing the unfunny Trump stuff because that appeals to some percentage of the population that will laugh at any Trump joke no matter how unfunny it is. If they weren't doing the unfunny Trump stuff, they would be doing some equally unfunny stuff that wouldn't appeal to anybody of any political persuasion.

was already on the downswing but I'd say roughly 20 years ago it stopped being genuinely funny 90% of the time.

I've tried to go back and watch the early seasons... honestly, it was hit and miss then, too. We just think it was better because the best clips are the ones shared and replayed.

TDS did terrible things to all comedy, but the good old days weren't always funny either.

Probably before I was born, and I’m in my 30’s

It was funny in the 90s when political, at least when Carvey and Phil Hartman were there.

It was never really funny…and on the rare occasions they had a funny skit, they invariably carry it i\out far too long. That said, enough high-school guys watch it to keep it from getting canceled for 50 years!

When did Phil Hartman get killed? Probably right around then.

The show in it’s entirety was never funny to me. Some of the skits are comedy gold though.
Silver Star Catering with Jonah Hill is my favorite, no idea why
David Pumpkins with Tom Hanks is my #2

When they were portraying Trump in a less hateful way (summer of 2023 until about a month ago) I thought it was the funniest Trump stuff they've done.

Unfortunately over the last month they've gone hateful again and it is no longer funny.

The show from 1975 wasn't political, and it still wasn't the least bit funny.

I think that people fail to realize why they obsess on Trump so much on the show. If they were making non-political jokes, they'd sound every bit as unfunny as they do now, and nobody whether liberal or conservative would watch the show. By making constant stupid Trump jokes, they at least ensure that liberals watch the show.

quote:

when it became political

You mean when they became politically slanted towards the left.

The show has always had political sketches that were funny no matter who you voted for. The Clinton scandal in the 90s made for some of the funniest sketches in the show’s history.

The older we get, the less things are funny because ‘we’ve heard it all before’. Same can be said with quality of anything (music, sports, etc).

Been there, done that so I’ll scream at a cloud.

I feel like every episode usually has one good sketch.
But i don't let politics define my daily life. It sucks how the world is right now.

It stopped being funny when they fired Norm MacDonald because one of the NBC higher-ups didn’t like his jokes about OJ. They fired Norm to protect the reputation of a murderer.

Norm hosting after that and wondering how he went from being too unfunny to work there but funny enough to host was a great monologue.
