It's still funny sometimes but definitely has a lot more pretentious leftwing propaganda and I don't use that term lightly. Seems like during the Obama years maybe late Bush they went from left leaning comedians to a leftwing mouth piece with a lot of their material.

SNL started being funny when you were 14 and stopped being funny when you were 29. Applicable to most.

It’s always been a little hit and miss, but there were a few sweet spots and golden years. I’ve barely watched the early seasons through ‘85 so not sure on those, but the early 90s were very good, and the new cast in the mid 90s were some great seasons too. But IMO, 2010-2014 stands out as some of the best years with the best combo of cast and writers.

This is the longest stretch of not funny that I can recall though
The writing room and returning cast has a lot to do with that

It was funny in the 90s when political, at least when Carvey and Phil Hartman were there.
It's funny when it is balanced. I always liked the Weekend Update segment the most. Fallon and Tina Fey were a good combo. This current pair has some moments...I do like the mixed race jokes they write the other person to say.

I am not sure when it stopped being funny but in every era, each episode would stop being funny after Weekend Update. back in the day it was great for a couple of sketches and then would drop off significantly.

You can precisely tell when they started checking off DEI boxes in their casting. They started casting unfunny people because of it.
They also rely on mean spirited politics too much. They've always been political, but it was more even handed and moderated in the past.
I'd say it started going downhill when the Kristin Wiig, Fred Armisen, Bill Hader era ended. It was pretty solid up until then, even if it wasn't quite up to its late 80s/mid 90s peak.

The early years were funny at the time because the entire idea of the show was unique and had never really been done like that. But most comedy doesn’t stay funny generations later. Steve Martin was considered hilarious back in the day. It’s horrible to watch now if you didn’t grow up with it. Comedy evolves and now everyone is too cynical to find much funny anymore.
But the 90s saw peak SNL and it went downhill after the Bush years in my opinion. I’ll tune in from time to time but cringe more than laugh. Good hosts can make it better. Shane Gillis was great and had some solid jokes. It’s too much liberal propaganda now. When weekend update can’t even hit a solid joke you know the cast sucks. It’s a DEI cast the last decade that just isn’t funny.
Norm and Farley was the pinnacle of SNL

This really is a subjective thing. Nearly every person who watched thinks the SNL years when they were in high school was the funniest years and everything after sucked. So the answer to your question is "depends on who you ask."

The cast isn’t that bad outside of Yang and a couple others. The show would be good if they had decent writers.

When did Phil Hartman get killed? Probably right around then.
He had already been gone to newsradio for 4 full seasons before he got merked.
