SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — Authorities revealed Friday that actor Gene Hackman died of heart disease and showed severe signs of Alzheimer’s disease a full week after his wife died of hantavirus in their home.
Authorities initially ruled out foul play after the bodies were discovered Feb 26. Immediate tests for carbon monoxide poisoning were negative.
Arakawa, 65, was found with an open prescription bottle and pills scattered on the bathroom counter. Authorities linked her death to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome.
Hackman, 95, was found in the home’s entryway. His death was tied to heart disease with Alzheimer’s disease contributing.
Hantavirus is a rare but potentially fatal disease spread by infected rodent droppings. It is typically is reported in spring and summer, often due to exposures that occur when people are near mouse droppings in homes, sheds or poorly ventilated areas.
Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza made the announcement alongside state fire and health officials at a news conference.
Investigators earlier retrieved personal items from the couple’s home, including a monthly planner and two cellphones.

So, Hackman lived with his dead wife lying on the bathroom floor for a week?

95 with Alzheimer's, he might not have even seen her. Probably just ambled around a bit for a week then had a heart attack trying to leave the house.

Miss the part (twice) where they said he had severe Alzheimer’s?

Sadly it's possible or likely he wasn't aware or couldn't process the situation. Alzheimers is evil.

Such a sad way to end their lives. Elderly people should have family or friends checking on them every few days at least

He must have some sorry arse kids because they hadn’t checked on their 95 year old, Alzheimer riddled dad for over a week. Or he’s 95 and they are old too with their own health problems?

Just a terrible situation all the way around.
Rats are evil, so is Alzheimer's.

He lived in the house with her dead body for a week before he died?

With how loaded Hackman was, I don’t know why the wife didn’t hire a caretaker to help look out for him. Especially since her health wasn’t the best with blood pressure and thyroid problems.

S***
Who'da thought Hanta? And that makes the estate settlement more interesting if they didn't leave wills.

A lot of elderly people have too much pride to accept someone caring for them. Their denial of care also allows them to deny their poor health and/or mental decline, which they don't want to accept.
Its not a fun time caring for stubborn old people in their last few years. Especially someone with dementia or Alzheimer's. Its a full time job.
