Does anyone wash their rice before cooking?

Growing up in Acadiana, none of my family ever did. In watching more cooking shows, it seems that most people nationwide do.

Some also mention that the properties may be preferable in some dishes but not others. So those that do they wash it for every dish or only some?

yes, add water, stir, and drain. I usually do this 4-5x. I cook a lot of Chinese/Thai/Indian food and most recipes do this.

Washing rice was never something done on either side of my family. I saw so many people recommending it, so I tried it about 3 times. I decided it wasn't worth the effort and stopped.

Agree with all of this. Never thought to wash rice until youtube chefs insisted on it. Noticed no actual difference in the final product so stopped washing.

Depends on the rice. Toro, no. Food club or Great Value generic rice, yes.

I'm a medium to long grain traditionalist, so not sure about Jasmine or Basmati rice

Only when using a rice cooker. I have a zojirushi rice cooker and it makes awesome rice, but it is even better when you rinse it. I have a little japanese rice washer now, its pretty easy, just rinse until the water runs clear.

Always wash it until water is clear. Once I add water for cooking I also add a splash of vinegar.

Yes, especially with short grain for sushi and Basmati.

Have a friend that worked at a rice bin. He said if you ever saw all the rodents and bugs like he has, you'd always wash your rice.

With that said, I don't know if it makes a difference, but my wife washes our rice before she cooks it.

I do it 3-5 times until the water isnt as murky.

I find it has a clearner taste to it, but some people say they cant tell the difference.

That said, there's definitely a difference in how easy it is to clearn your rice cooker afterwards. There's almost no leftover starches in the rice cooker if you properly rinse the rice.

was told by my grandparents that is why they added the splash of vinegar as well, but that was before rice cookers when they cooked them in a pot

If making plain steamed rice, yes.

Otherwise no, especially when making a dish like jambalaya where I want the rice to cook in the good stuff. I add the rice to my pot before the stock to coat it in the fat and flavor that comes out of the previous cooking steps like browning, searing, and sweating. Rinsing the rice before this step would prevent it from absorbing all of the goodness.

I find bugs and small worms in my rice reasonably often (from fresh bags). I wash my rice multiple times.

Had a doctor once tell me that rice in storage is sprayed with poison to keep the rats off. Not sure I believe that, but still. So sure, I wash it, but that seems quite futile in the face of pesticides and vermin.

We’re dead already.

I was told if you have “enriched” rice you are washing away all the enriching nutritional properties. But then I think, why the hell do I need any of that anyway. I just want freaking rice.
