One of my buds sold his company and evidently made some big bucks. He’s having a party to celebrate and for some reason he asked me to look into champagne and he said to not spare any expense. I don’t know anything about champagne. I had some don perignone once and I guess that was good.

I been looking and found some bottles costing thousands of dollars which blew me away. I had no idea champagne could cost that much.

What is the best?

Lol?

Krug.

Generally considered among the very best. It’s the king. They have different levels obviously but Krug grand Cuvee is perfectly good for anything. Vintage will cost you 400-500 if you want the next level.

Salon Le Mesnil is another one of the ballers but those can set you back 1500ish. Never had it so can’t say from experience.

Lady friend said she had something called Salon. Looked into it and it’s 1,500 per bottle!

I mean, in a blind taste test, does anyone know the difference between this stuff and a bottle of Krug?

Go to a good wine store and get some advice. Preferably one that carries a lot of Champagne (because not all do). You can buy high end stuff without spending a ridiculous amount of money.

Normal people no way.

And Krug isn’t cheap it’s 280-300. It’s a baller bottle of champs. People say “wow” when you bring out a bottle of Krug.

Total wine has a great selection. Dom Perignon will do just fine. Standard bottle is in the $270 at Total Wine. There may be limits on the number of bottles.

Don. Dom. Dang autocorrect.

Dom’s younger, lesser known brother.

I disagree wholeheartedly. Most anyone can tell the difference between Champagnes but it doesn't mean they will like the more expensive one. I am talking about a test with three glasses an A, B and C. A&B are two different Champagnes and C is the same as either A or B almost everyone will be able to place C next to the matching glass.

My wife and I both enjoy Champagne and usually have a bottle when we get home from out bi-monthly date night. Our absolute favorite brand is Louis Roederer. Our favorite from them is the 2012 Louis Roederer Cristal.

Now I would recommend just getting Dom, we like the 2013 but non-vintage is fine. I would recommend Dom for someone asking someone else that has to research champagne because it is kinda like Rolex. It is a very good Champs and while it isn't the best it isn't priced like the best either. It is also a house that everyone knows. I mean if you are having a party celebrating making money use a brand that everyone associates with money. For a spirits analogy my wife and I are both Scotch drinkers and if someone not into Scotch asks for a single malt rec for a splurge party I would recommend Glenlivet or Macallen. Both are widely recognized as "good Scotch" they are very good Scotches and they are not going to turn a bunch of once and a while Scotch drinkers off like Islay distillers might.

Dom is just the safe choice IMO but it does have the same baggage as Rolex in some people who are getting into Champagne may view it as a boring poser choice, if you think you have a lot of those around go with Louis Roederer.

I have been blown away by bottles of red wine costing hundreds of dollars. Not so much with champagne.

I have had Crystal Dom P and champagnes in that class. They’re are great but not that much better than a good grower’s champagne costing well under $100.

If I am going to spend $300 on one bottle it is going to be a bottle of red.

What are you using it for? If you say mimosas and a kids graduation party from elementary school, you gotta think about Borrasca ($9, nobody has ever complained.) It's all vagina measuring, like dudes do with bourbon.

Special occasions, Cliquot impresses enough for you to get two bottles to present to the guest of honor, and switch immediately to under $15 a bottle.

It’s a bunch of people from his work, some wives, other business associates and I guess some friends like me. Guessing 50-100 people.

He wants to celebrate large. I don’t know how many bottles yet but he said price didn’t matter.
I’m going to tell him about the 1,500 salon and see what he thinks of that. I just don’t want to spend his money on something that doesn’t really taste better than a $500 bottle or even $200…

Go to Keife & Company in New Orleans they are very knowledgeable and will do you right! Also the Martin's Wine Cellar in Garden District will do you right!

Look for a Billecart-Salmon or Pol Roger for basically the same price as Veuve.

Both are much better.

For up to 100 people -
Unless you are Donald Trump planning to celebrate an election, you are not going to get the Crystal or the Dom for this many people. The Veuve Cliquot will do just fine. Everyone will recognize and be impressed with the label.

Go get a few cases of champagne. Billecart, Perrier—Jouet, etc.

But then go get a magnum or double magnum of something baller. That way you have good champagne for everyone to guzzle and a baller bottle for photo ops, a toast, spraying, what have you.

That’s the way to handle this.
