Cities in general were peaking (relatively) before the summer of riots and COVID, and most have been declining since. Some of the crime has leveled off it would seem, but things still aren't in recovery mode yet IMO.

The Bham metro area? Maybe. The actual city? Not so much.

I went for a weekend and attended 3 Pirates games and a college football game. Had a blast. I definitely recommend people visit Pittsburgh.

Downtown Detroit has come back well. The rest of the city is still a shithole. Detroit has always had good suburbs and those are continuing to grow as people are moving to the Midwest for cheaper housing.

All of the major cities would make big comebacks if crime is stamped out. Ole Rudy did this in NYC. Now they are letting it slide back.

the crime rates are setting all time new record highs, and thats despite them only reporting 10% of the crimes that are happening

Is as much a shithole now as it was when I lived there in 2013.

The southern Bham suburbs might be the best bang for your buck living in the US. Cheap housing, good schools, low crime, beautiful topography, etc. The city of Birmingham is a shithile with a higher murder rate than New Orleans.

i think the only thing that saves us in new orleans is that it's just not big enough to be worse.

It's incredible.

We stayed downtown and took the subway across the river to the stadium a couple times, one time we walked because we wanted to see the Point Park downtown. Subway is free in that area, they only charge if you're coming in from the outlying areas. It was clean and packed, but we really only rode it before and after games.

I've lived in St Louis for a decade now and still haven't ridden public transportation here.

I’ve heard the downtown area has came a long way over the past decade or so. The new stadium and revitalization efforts are supposedly making a difference

That’s too strong. There are some definite bright spots in the city. But there are some serious problems too.

Metro area has always been strong. The City is thriving right now. I thought the whole entertainment scene downtown would level off after Covid but new stuff is popping up left and right. They are building apartments and condos like crazy, and they seem to filling them up.

I know someone will mention crime, but the majority of it happens in places most normal people will not find themselves.

For Detroit at least, there's a lot of nuance.

It's "coming back" from a very, very low place. Yes things are better in a lot of neighborhoods, and they've done a lot to make downtown a nice place to visit in the summer, but it's not like everything is skyrocketing and good, new jobs are being created in mass.
