Question for people that have watched Dune I and II, but haven't read the books.

Did you feel completely lost?

I've read the books twice, so I completely understood what was happening during the movie. I was a bit distracted though, because I was thinking people that haven't read them won't completely get this.

Just curious on the opinions of readers and non-readers about the movies.

It makes sense to me but I'm comparing them to the Lynch movie

There are a shite ton of details in these movies directed straight at readers that movie watchers won't get after 5 viewings.

The unfortunate part of this movie is that his unborne sister didn't make it to the movie for the final scene. She was the best part of book II.

I guess they're saving her to make the 3rd more interesting.

I’m not going to lie I would probably be a little lost had I not read the book before the first film. I had to explain some stuff to my wife as we watched them. So many factions at play and also Paul with his 15 titles haha

Lost is pretty accurate. I plan on watching both movies again so I can figure stuff out.

It took me four different times to make it through the first movie. By the fourth viewing I was dialed in and focused on what was going on and didn’t feel lost at all watching the 2nd. I’m hooked now and have been reading up on everything. I thought the 2nd movie was one of the best sci-fi movies I’ve seen.

Made sense to me, but yea there were moments that things took a minute to figure out.

I had to explain certain terms to the wife, but she followed the movies pretty well, especially the 2nd.

The first one was harder for her.

Haven’t read a book
Loved both movies and don’t feel lost at all.

You book readers are a weird group.

Never read the books and felt a little lost but mostly enjoyed the first one. Main question marks were what spice was for and space guild, politics of the empire.

I walked in knowing that it was a syfi story about rebellion on a desert planet and there were giant space worms. And that people hated the 80s movie but that was really all I knew.

Arakkis, prophecy, Bene Gesserit, Harnikans. Freeman, etc. was all pretty easy to follow.

I went and watched the Lynch movie and while I get a lot of the complaints, it filled me in a bit better.

Didn’t really have any questions or felt lost on Dune 2 but I did notice his sister being left out.

Never read the books. Wasn’t lost at all. I think the new movies do a great job of adapting a sprawling, difficult book into easily digestible pieces for a movie audience.

Never watched the 84 version because it’s so campy bad. I didn’t feel like those films took the material seriously in the way that the Villaneuve films do. You don’t stunt cast Sting if you’re trying to make a serious movie.

I wasn’t lost. At first I was a little, but I thought they did a good job considering all the different characters.

I knew the books were intricate so I read a primer online that explained the history and politics of all involved right before I watched the movie. I think it would have been confusing otherwise.

Never read the books or watched the Lynch movie. But loved Dune 1 so much I read some details wikipedia notes. And even if I hadnt, the basic story is enough to keep folks enthralled. There is a obviously a more detailed story there from the books, but I think the movies stand well enough on their own.

Watched Dune 1&2, the '84 version, and am pretty sure I watched the SyFy version too, but all I remember was that it was decent?

Never read the books. Feel there's lots of material that's still not been well adapted to screen.

I don't feel as much 'lost' as just resigned to accepting things are that way because the author wanted them to be and it works for the story. Some things just never click with me, as to why the Emperor was motivated to fricking with House Atreides, or what's the real story with the Bene Gesserit order.

And with most sci-fi movies on alien planets, where does all the oxygen come from if the whole surface is desert?

I'm not lost but I felt the movie was disjointed or rushed in how it moved along

I watched and enjoyed them but I can’t figure out if the Bene Gesserit are good or bad.
