I've been on several. and they give you a time to be back onboard. Most times they do have a sort of grace period.
last one i was on, i watched the ship next to ours wait nearly an hour for some folks who weren't back on the boat yet.
that ship was still waiting when ours left.

But on March 27, the group of eight tourists were late to return to the ship for the all aboard time of 3 p.m. from a private excursion, which was not organized by the cruise line, on the island.
There's your problem right there. If you ever sign up for an excursion not organized by the cruise line, while less expensive, you are essentially agreeing to the chance your ship could leave you behind if something happens and you're late getting back. This is true for every cruise line service and it's been this way for as long as I can remember.
That's why I always pay a little extra to do the excursion organized by the crews line, so I don't get left behind. They have to wait for you if it's their excursion service, even if it means holding everybody else up. No sympathy for those people.

Don’t be late for departure. Imagine if every ship waited for every late passenger at each port.

It is your job to get back to the cruise. If you go on a non cruise sanctioned outing then you are on your own. They knew what they were doing.

Don't miss ship's movement, you will be left behind. That's why you do excursions through the cruise ship. The boat will wait for a late return in that case. Otherwise, you're arse out.

I’ve been to São Tomé. I hopped a ride with a local to get to the tip of the island where our resort was. Beautiful island and the locals were super nice. Beer was 25 cents a bottle. Maybe this was their reason for missing the boat.

The over use of “reach out” has become a cancer to society.
I’m starting to immediately discredit or ignore anyone that uses it in daily conversation.
Overreach is fine by me. I get irrationally mad when I see/hear "clap back" though.
And I've been on a couple of cruises (been a long time though) and like most here have said they make it SUPER clear that they won't wait for you if you aren't back in time and will leave your arse at the port and you're responsible for catching up at a future port. So I'm not sure what the problem is here or why it's even a story...I imagine this shite happens all the time. is this one special because of the high amount of Karen in this couple?

Typical American tourists

No sympathy.
You freelance and don't stick with the cruise arranged excursions, that's the risk you run.
Dumbasses.

they were late to return from a private tour.
Say it all. Headline should read:
Norweigian Cruise Ship departs port on time
Do a private tour and you accept the risk associated with it. That includes leaving your arse behind so the other 2000+ passengers aren't inconvenienced. Zero sympathy.

frick them. This has been a rule on cruise ships from the dawn of cruise ships.
You do a private tour and you are late you are on your own. I have zero sympathy for the stranded passengers.

They knew what time the ship was leaving when it arrived at port. No excuses! I don't give a shite about being pregnant, medicine etc....who gives a shite. The complaint dept is closed!

Ok, let's wait for them. How long do we wait? Hours more? Then, the ship runs the risk of missing its next port of call.
Gotta draw the line.
Unless this group was literally standing on the dock right at the re entry point of the ship, and the staff told them to f off, they have no sympathy from me.

Immediately don't feel bad. It's their own fault and exactly why you only book through the cruise company because they will always wait if you do.

Worth noting that this cruise also originated in Africa, so it's not like they need to get back the US or Europe. They just need to get to the next port, like anyone who misses their boat would. Why is this a story?

After what we witnessed, we truly believe that although there’s a set of rules or policies that the ship may have followed, they followed those rules too rigidly.
Hahahaha!!!!
“Even though we knew the rules and thousands of others were able to abide by them with no issue, every other person aboard the ship should have been inconvenienced and waited for us because they should bend the rules for us.”
Frick off see you next Tuesday

Sounds like they missed the departure time. All on them. Would they expect Delta to hold a plane full of passengers at the gate until they decided to leave the bar?
Sounds like they would.

I can only imagine the shitshow that would exist if a massive cruise ship waited every time someone couldn't get back in time for departure from a port
I think these ships run on pretty tight schedules with certain windows for arrival and departure in port, fuel schedules, etc.
