Yeah, and you ignore all the other times other top programs do it because of above.

You’re a pussy.

In the refs defense: running down the court on a fast break, whistle-in-mouth, defender makes a move where contact happens 9/10 times, contact happens and ball doesnt go in, player flies to floor.

He couldnt tell that the defender hit that perfect window where the ball was and shooters hand was not.

Bang-Bang play. Official reviews on fouls under 90 seconds would have potentially changed the outcome of the game.
Can only leave it up to the ref so much. Humans make errors. There has to be a way that we can get the call right.

At the end of the day, you can't guess that there was contact. You either see it, or you don't. You should never call a foul because you assume that contact happened.

It would be similar to calling pass interference in football because a receiver falls down on a route, and the ref assumes that the defender pushed the receiver. If you don't see it, don't call it.

But you guys take it to an art form.

1990 lost as a 2 seed to 7 seed seed UCLA
1992 lost as a 1 seed to 9 seed UTEP
1998 lost as a 1 seed to 8 seed Rhode Island
2005 lost as a 3 seed to 14 seed Bucknell
2006 lost as a 4 seed to 13 seed Detroit
2010 lost as a 1 seed to 9 seed Northern Iowa
2011 lost as a 1 seed to 11 seed VCU
2014 lost as a 2 seed to 10 seed Stanford
2015 lost as a 2 seed to 7 seed Wichita
2023 lost as a 1 seed to 8 seed Arkansas

Those are just the really embarrassing ones. We could also talk about UVA in 1995, Arizona in 1997, Michigan in ‘13, Auburn in ‘19, and USC in ‘21.

Watching it live I thought there was a foul.

It sucks they blew the call but in real speed that was a fast play where the Kansas player had both hands on the ball going in for a dunk and the Samford player got his hand in the small opening on the ball between the dunkers two hands. In that situation the defensive player is usually fouling out of desperation. Not an easy call to make if you don't have a great line of sight to the action. They 100% blew it but this wasn't like the AU-UVA game several years ago where the player clearly double dribbled.

I like how in your own sample, you pass over a multiple year span of where we successively went past the first weekend.

You can act like it’s unique to us through your own biases, but our rate of success to tournament bids is comparable to the others you conveniently ignore.

Just enjoy Gonzaga winning on Saturday. Even if we coasted we were still going to lose with a short rotation. I’m sure if we somehow win though you’ll pivot or avoid the subject.

Good. Bad officiating is ruining almost all sports at this point, and the officials need to either be full time with the benefits that comes with, or gone.

I think it’s probably always been suspect but with todays technology it makes it more evident.

Basketball moves so fast and you arguably could call a foul on almost every possession. So it's hard to arm-chair ref when we have the benefit of slow-mo and several replays. The refs have to get it right, live.

That said, I think far too often officials anticipate fouls and reflexively call one even if it turns out it wasn't a foul. There's 16 seconds left in the game. Samford is down. Kansas has a run out for what looks to be a dunk. You're EXPECTING Samford is going to contest the dunk at all costs and foul if they have to in that situation. So you are looking for it...then he blocks it clean. But because you are expecting one thing to happen you reflexively blow the whistle even though what you expected didn't happen.

Devastating blow for Samford who had KU on the ropes. Equally devastating blow for my bracket...which had Samford winning

Jay Bilas is a condescending, elitist dickhead. He’s what many of us think of when we think of past and present Duke basketball players.

-------------------------------------------------

I agree w you and we're on the same side here.

I just want to continue playing the devils advocate because I think it was a tough call that happened quickly. Live I thought high chance there was foul, replay obvi not.

It just reminds me of my same point in original post: Saints vs Rams no call in 2018-2019.
Rules were put in place after this game but
Ref didnt see it and didnt call it even though the bang-bang play and aftermath was typical of a pass interference. But he didnt see it. So he didnt call it.

If rules were in place it wouldnt matter if he called it or not. The correct call would have been implemented in the end.

Thats all I am saying. 99% of time you're right. If you dont see it, dont call it. These are 1 in 1,000 chances.

But at the end of the day, it should be reviewable.

Here are the other top three blue blood programs and their “embarrassing” tourney performances since ‘89. Kansas still way ahead of the pack.

Duke:
‘97 lost as a 2 seed to 10 seed Providence
‘08 lost as a 2 seed to 7 seed West Virginia
‘12 lost as a 2 seed to 15 seed Lehigh
‘14 lost as a 3 seed to 14 seed Mercer
‘17 lost as a 2 seed to 7 seed South Carolina

Kentucky
‘04 lost as a 1 seed to 9 seed UAB
‘21 lost as a 2 seed to 15 seed St. Peter’s
‘24 lost as a 3 seed to 14 seed Oakland

UNC
‘93 lost as a 1 seed to 9 seed Boston College
‘99 lost as a 3 seed to 14 seed Weber State
‘01 lost as a 2 seed to 7 seed Penn State
‘06 lost as a 3 seed to 11 seed George Mason
‘18 lost as a 2 seed to 7 seed Texas A&M

Once again, you leave out salient things such as losing seasons and then missing tournaments altogether.

We sure as hell have a more recent NC than all those guys. Even beat one of them for it.

Clearly it wasn't. Had it been, the refs wouldn't have called a foul.

Plus, as some idiot Kansas fan said in another thread... the refs had been helping Samford out all along... that's the only way they came back from 21 down.

Replays, though, showed Staton-McCray appeared to block just the ball and should not have been called for a foul, leading to plenty of outrage across the college basketball world.

That's why watching basketball isn't fun for me anymore. If you touch a hair on someone's arm it's a foul
