This is one call folks are going to be talking about for a long time.
As No. 13-seeded Samford attempted to catch up to and potentially upset No. 4 seed Kansas on Thursday night in their first-round Midwest Region clash, a controversial foul all but ended the dream as the Jayhawks squeaked by with a 93-89 NCAA Tournament win.
After Jaden Campbell pulled the Bulldogs within one with a 3-pointer with under 15 seconds left in the second half, Kansas inbounded the ball, and Nicolas Timberlake went up for a dunk to try to put the Jayhawks back up by three.

But A.J. Staton-McCray caught him down from behind with what appeared to be a perfectly timed block, giving Samford a shot.
However, it was all for naught.
quote:
Officials called Staton-McCray with a shooting foul, and Timberlake sank both free throws and Kansas advanced
quote:
Replays, though, showed Staton-McCray appeared to block just the ball and should not have been called for a foul, leading to plenty of outrage across the college basketball world.

Truly shocking that KU was given a gift call

Just a horrible call. I know we have the benefit of slow motion, but the commentators started saying it was clean before they even showed the slow mo replay. College basketball officiating just isn’t good.

I'll never understand how they can review a million dumb things when games aren't even this close sometimes. Yet, in the NCAA tournament, with the game on the line, they can't review that to get the correct call. It would have been such an easy review too.

ROUGH CALL. ROUGH ROUGH CALL.
Feel bad for Samford and anyone who bet on them or has any ties to them.
It was a bang-bang play and the ref made a quick decision and it sucks that it was the wrong one.
As much as I want to blame it on the ref, it is NCAA BASKETBALLS FAULT.
Why are there replays for out of bounds and miniscule things throughout the game, slowing it down. And you SOMEHOW DONT HAVE A RULE TO CHECK ON THIS???? As long as the last few minutes of games take already, what is an addition of a official review under 90 seconds or something for big plays. Ridiculous.
Took something away from those players that they will never get back, but will sound like sore losers if they ever mention they got jipped.
Reminds me of the bad call in the Saints-Rams playoff game in playoffs of 2018 szn.(Our last chance w drewby)

I try not to blame an official for the outcome
Maybe he gets the block and they miss the game winner
maybe they play better in the first half and don't put themselves in that position
BUT
this one stings. terrible call

I saw Jay Bilas and his chicken neck defending the refs on Sports Center this morning. Pretty pathetic.

It was a fantastic defensive play

If a blue blood player murdered a small school player on the court, Bilas and his ilk would defend him.

I’m so sorry that this happened.
We need to do better as a society so we can move forward from these grave injustices. We can no longer ignore the cries. Communities are hurting. Enough is enough and it’s time to start a conversation.
For the people in pain who are voicing all their hurt; I promise you. I hear you.

Jay Bilas is an idiot. That's a terrible call. If there was body to body contact that made it murkier then I could understand an iffy whistle. In this case the action is all at the ball so imagining a foul is much more difficult and implies that you were either expecting to call a foul or hoping to call a foul.

Good. Bad officiating is ruining almost all sports at this point, and the officials need to either be full time with the benefits that comes with, or gone.

Nothing will change, and bad calls will happen probably also today and throughout the tournament
And the next one

Nothing new, refs are crooked.

Samford doesn’t pull it to within one without refs help. They called a jump ball after we called time out.
Even then, we still had to hit the free throws and they still had 15 seconds to tie the game and didn’t.
And where is our money motivated officiating bail out when we actually get upset in the tournament? Kansas teams that were light years better than this one?

I missed it live, so hindsight is 20/20 and all, but watching the full speed replay it is very obviously a clean block. How the hell?

The NCAA and that ref owe Samford a written apology.

I don't know how the ref could have missed this even live. It's obviously not a foul. Outrageous.
