re: Refs eviscerated for controversial foul call in Samford-Kansas March Madness thriller

Not only did they rob us of just a great play, they robbed us of a potential game winning shot, down 1 with time running out.
College basketball refs rely so heavily on anticipating fouls. It is a joke. Most of the time you can see them starting to call fouls before the play even happens.

If the guy doesn't fall on his face, it's possible they dont' call the foul, but b/c he landed the way he did, they just assumed the defender had to hit his arm.
I know a foul is a foul, but i've always been of the belief that the refs should swallow the whistle just a little bit more in the last seconds like that. Give the benefit of the doubt to the defense late in games and make the offense earn it.

I don't think full timers helps, you'll run into the same issues, not sure being a full timer prevents that call from happening.
I think in basketball and football especially, the game has gotten too fast and the refs have too much to discern live, you have the technology available to take it out of their hands but refuse to for....reasons.
Basketball and baseball seem to suffer the most from umpire/ref biases "ahh this guy is reffing tonight, he's very ticky tack with foul calls" that's not even starting on the absurdity of "superstar calls" Then a baseball game can be completely disrupted by whatever fat arse decides his strike zone will be on a given evening

I'll never understand how they can review a million dumb things when games aren't even this close sometimes. Yet, in the NCAA tournament, with the game on the line, they can't review that to get the correct call. It would have been such an easy review too.
But even if they review this foul, it takes away from what would have happened live. Samford got the rebound and would have had a 5-4 with under 15 seconds left down 1 had a foul not been called. that's drastically different than reviewing it and then taking it out with the defense set.
Just sucks. and yes i'd rather they have something in place to review it, just wish they'd make the right call live in a situation like that.

Feel bad for Samford and anyone who bet on them or has any ties to them.
It was a bang-bang play and the ref made a quick decision and it sucks that it was the wrong one.
I understand how a non-call occurs, you didn't see the contact, but how do you call a foul that doesn't occur? You either saw the contact or you didn't. And you clearly can't see contact that doesn't happen, at this point you're just guessing.
ETA: it's not even like there was incidental contact where a judgement call had to be made, there was zero contact other than hand on ball.

Jay Bilas has so many terrible takes, i wonder what his TD username is.

Refs can’t run as fast as the athletes on these fast breaks. Another example was Trey Burke fouling out in the title game a few years back in a similar play.
We have an easy solution, just like in baseball they add 2 more umps in the ncaa tourney they should add 2 more refs to stay at the end of each baseline

The frustrating thing here is at full speed, it’s not a foul. It’s not like you need slo mo to see if he stepped on a line or something

He’s always been that way. I remember way back in the day when Mick Cronin was still at Cinncy, there was an incident involving him and Ted Valentine. They got into an argument and “TV Teddy” stepped right into his space trying to intimidate him. It was so obvious that Valentine overstepped his bounds, he even publicly apologized after the game. However, Bilas went on TV the next morning and criticized Cronin, basically placing all the blame on him for escalating the situation. Bilas has always been a hack.

That's a terrible idea. You dont' need more idiots ready to blow the whistle. There's always one idiot making foul calls from half court 50' away on plays under the basket when there's a ref looking right at the play from 10' away. We don't need more opportunities for that.

Agree. Just brutal all around.

I totally agree. After Gonzaga beats KU tomorrow, that will be the fourth time in the past five tournaments that KU has failed to advance past the first weekend. It may be time to have a conversation about why Bill Self is struggling so much in the tournament.

Jay Bilas has not integrity. Say the truth, not tow the line.

He really does. You don't need to know anything about the sport, just take the opposite side of Bilas and you'll be correct a majority of the time.

You have one elite 8 ever. All you idiots laughed at my final 4 prediction two years ago too and scattered like roaches and anchored the thread when we won it all.

I’ve made it known that I don’t particularly care about Tennessee basketball. I was raised in place and a time when Tennessee basketball was never on tv because they were so bad. I have zero emotional connection to the program. Even so, that would be like trying to compare Tennessee and KU football. Two totally different mentalities and levels of support from the university and athletic department.

Maybe the bracket will blow up this year like it did then. I’m honestly pulling for you guys. I hope that you win another title and help with the programs lackluster history in March. If so, the university may be compelled to take down those Helms banners that are hanging in the rafters at Allen.

In the same timespan Duke, UNC, UCLA, and Kentucky have also struggled in the tournament overall or have had a losing season.
You’re only critical of Kansas because I make you pissy.
what a chicken shite.

I agree with your point.
In the refs defense: running down the court on a fast break, whistle-in-mouth, defender makes a move where contact happens 9/10 times, contact happens and ball doesnt go in, player flies to floor.
He couldnt tell that the defender hit that perfect window where the ball was and shooters hand was not.
Bang-Bang play. Official reviews on fouls under 90 seconds would have potentially changed the outcome of the game.
Can only leave it up to the ref so much. Humans make errors. There has to be a way that we can get the call right.

No, I’m critical of KU because for the past 35 years they have a tendency of choking like dogs in the tournament.
