re: Has there ever been a pos switch (for lack of depth) that's worked out for that player?

Julian Edelman QB to WR

Todd Christensen was a fullback, Dallas wanted him to play TE he refused so they cut him. Signs with the Giants, wants to play FB so they cut him. Raider finally convince him to play TE, where he made the pro bowl 5 times.

for Michigan, we've had a few in recent years:

Hassan haskins - Currently with the Titans. started out at LB, but we were thin/unproductive at RB, and become arguably the best RB at UM in the past 25 years

Mikey Sainristil - started out at WR, then switched to DB/NB because of a glut of WRs that we had for the 2022 season. might be one of the most impactful defenders UM has had this century, and should be drafted in the top 2 rounds

Kalel Mullings - played LB, but blake corum got hurt late in 2022, and Mullings switched to RB the week of the OSU game and threw the ball on a trick play in Columbus. I'm expecting him to big things this year, as he's a more traditional, big 10 powerback with very good speed

But did he move because we had depth issues at DE or other reasons?

He was always going to be a DE, it just took Saban a little time to convince Spears his future was on defense.

Richard Samuel at UGA.

Got constantly shifted around between LB and RB. Was the emergency third or fourth string back in the 2011 season and ended up being heavily utilized in the middle of the season while Isaiah Crowell was constantly hurt.

Was the hero of the 2011 Florida game until he broke his leg on the game-sealing first down run on the literal last play. Otherwise, he probably would’ve been Georgia’s featured back the rest of the season.

And started his career as a linebacker.

Jason Witten from DE to TE
And another Tenn DL recruit: JC Copeland from Tenn. 4-star DL commit to LSU signee, who moved to FB for Les.

Tennessee second-year coach Derek Dooley, a one-time LSU assistant under Nick Saban before becoming head coach at Louisiana Tech, said the amount of talent stockpiled by the No. 1-ranked Tigers is astounding.

His example is LSU sophomore fullback J.C. Copeland. As a high school senior when he had 27 sacks (that's not a typo) for LaGrange (Ga.) Troup County, Copeland, now 6-1, 275, was rated the nation's 17th best defensive end.

"We were begging to get him (Copeland) when I got here," Dooley said. "We were begging to have him at nose guard and we lost him to LSU where's he's really rolling as a second-team fullback. That's what they (LSU) are.

Baseball has a lot of outfielders who switch to 1B later in their careers, Charles Woodson often switched between safety and corner

JJ Watt was a TE at Central Michigan before transferring to Wisconsin and switching positions.
