Youths complaining about a lack of "third places" lately

It seems like in the last couple years everyone under the age of 30 discovered the term "third place" which refers to a location that's not work or home where people socialize. It's the button Gen Z pushes to sound sophisticated. Parks, libraries, bowling alley, church coffee shops, social clubs, et al. Young people lament that society is collapsing because they don't have another place to gather in anymore.
The thing that I don't get is that all these places still exist and they just choose not to go to them. So they're just complaining about not taking advantage of the resources available.

Your mom likes it in her third place.

third places get turned to absolute shite by the public. think of all the fun places when we were younger. hang out at the mall, astroworld for vacation, local parks and hang outs. culture and vandalism closes those places down or makes them undesirable.

Adults have a bar and that's that.
Go to Europe. Every neighborhood has a pub or beer garden within two blocks. You can't throw a dead cat and not hit one.
I wish we had that here, outside of New Orleans, so I wouldn't have to drive home from mine.

Maybe they are referring to places affected by cultcha?
Ex: Super Bowl Championship Celebrations

My 3rd and 4th places were destroyed by Dora the Explorer during her COVID reign of terror.
Now I just have the golf club.

I think it's more a problem with technology and society. Everyone is so unapproachable these days. People have their faces buried in their phones and/or ear buds in their ears.
People in public places all put out this vibe that says "leave me the frick alone" most of the time.

I'm sure third places are not quite as prominent as they used to be, but mostly I'm with you. They're there. The younger generations just don't go.
Bar I went to last night was packed to the gills. Just with older people who enjoy bars and not younger people who never got into them.
I definitely could see private clubs/country clubs on the decline. The place we go is absolutely BEGGING young people to join, to the point where I doubt you even need to be sponsored by a member anymore. Young people just aren't as interested in that stuff for fun, and even young professionals aren't as concerned with rubbing elbows outside of work hours.

As the stare at their phones, text but never actually "talk" to anybody, stay inside online, do nothing but play video games as a kid (except Braxxson & Jaxxson of course), and celebrate allowing criminals to run free and trash the once nice public spaces....
rant over....
NOW GET OFF MY LAWN!!!!

The brewery boom was great for this. Packed with singles, families, etc.
Often outside, and often with little to do other than socialize with neighbors.
ETA: And they're often unremarkable or even dumpy, which makes them completely unattractive to the crowds that end up exchanging gunfire in the parking lot. In the Southeast, the flashier the communal space, the more likely it'll be on the nightly news. People from other parts of the country don't understand this at all.

Gyms are always good. If you want to avoid culcha, you just have to go to one expensive enough to keep undesirables out. Those $10/month places will be covered up in thugs just there to play basketball and cause problems.

I've never heard this phrase uttered in my life.

In the US; "Third Places", especially free "third places", tend to attract a certain element that make them "Bad Places" in short order.
Europe and Asia have less of those elements.

IF we are talking about teenagers, I think this is legit complaint. Most malls are gone. Parks are mostly trashed and many closed at night. No teen clubs cause they turned ghetto. The few bowling alleys are full of weird old people. Most skating rinks have closed.
Most of the places I hung out as a teenager are no longer around and were not replaced.
Now if you are taking 20-somethings, they have more options... but they are generally limited to a bar or a bar-type environment.

The daiquiri shop nearby is always full. Donuts in the parking lot too. What's the problem?

That’s what happens when you let the malls go to shite.
