Scenario 1) is Neal catching and Travinski DHing with Milazzo ready to become a defensive replacement as needed
This is the right answer. I expect that to mainly be the case during SEC play especially.

Ethan Frey has been getting steady work at catcher with the 2’s and is another guy in this sophomore class you can tell Jay is doing anything he can to get at bats. Frey’s got an incredibly rare frame where’s he going to continue to get stronger and not show it with lack of mobility. Power tool is pretty incredible to no surprise.
Am really hoping we can get him into the lineup in the outfield. His bat would be great in the lineup.

First of all, thanks for this update. I'm pumped.
I won't pretend to know more than you about LSU baseball. But I do know a little about this situation. And Jared Jones will see a little time behind the plate, possibly more than Frey. During those first 8 games over a 10 day span, they will work in 4 catchers and I heard Jones' name in that mix. Frey should be the day 1 RF, but I think we could see him catch during that stretch as well. And while we all know Jones will be at 1B on day 1, Coach Jordan would tell you he's very comfortable with Jones catching. All 5 of these guys could start at most places. It's a good problem to have and I think the coaches will shuffle them a good bit to keep everyone healthy and rested.

Thanks, Baw.
I like Travinski catching mid-week games to give the weekend catchers a rest, and DH'ing in the weekend series conference games.

Adam - I have a catching question that I am not sure how to ask for purposes of this discussion but I will try. I recall during some of the CWS broadcasts it was mentioned about how well Milazzo did at stealing strikes for pitchers. Specifically think i remember it with Floyd. How much weight does the ability for the catcher to add value to the pitching staff matter vs offensive production? Is that quantifiable? Not talking about blocking balls in the dirt to prevent passed balls or wild pitches. I am talking borderline strikes one catcher can get vs another. With the great group of catchers we have, this is one element i don't think gets discussed much. seems the lean is mostly to the bat.

Dylan Crews has been the best catcher on the roster for years.

My opinion - Depends on the lineup you're working with. Last year anyone would argue LSU didn't have hole/automatic out in it's lineup and so you have more slack so to speak if you wish to go with a defensive catcher at times. Catchers stealing pitches, you're right it's hard to quantify it and it doesn't get brought up enough. Over the course of a year I think things tend to even out but if you're in an elimination game then yes that becomes a bigger focal point.
With this years potential starting 9 you go down what they have returning and you've lost 60% of your HR's, 60% of your 2B's, 60% of your total runs...it's not unmanageable but there are still a few question marks on defensive side, how much will this team run on the base paths? Personally I think Johnson needs to figure out a way to have both Neal and Travinski in the lineup at all times if they can afford it over the course of the season. Milazzo will catch a ton, LSU hasn't had this kind of depth at catcher in quite some time.
