I carry a Colt Delta Elite 10mm in a chest rig. That makes me feel all warm and snuggly inside the woods where I walk.

Also, there’s a less than 1% chance you’ll see a black bear.
La has had one bear attack in its history - and that one is dubious at best…..

I carry a ruger gp100 .357 mag. It’s a bit heavy, but with a good holster and belt it’s just fine.

This is my next purchase. Sportsmans Warehouse has it in stock here.

Upvoted. Nothing better.

Although if the budget is $1200, I might be tempted to look for a new Colt - just because I’ve always wanted one. I don’t think the colt is better at all - just prettier.

While attacks on humans by wild pigs do occur, research showed that these events are extremely rare (Mayer 2013). This study compiled available data from 412 attacks over a 187-year period (1825-2012) involving 427 wild pigs and 665 humans. Seventy percent of documented attacks occurred from 2000-2012.

It is worth noting that 31% of documented “attacks” in this study did not involve any physical contact between the wild pig and victims. Rather, the “attack” resulted in the victim either being chased or treed. While 69% of the attacks documented in the study did involve physical contact, only 4 fatal attacks have ever been reported in the US. Moreover, 3 of these fatalities were the direct result of humans pursuing wounded wild pigs that were being hunted. In hunting related attacks, 48% were from wounded wild pigs.

There you go into bringing facts into this discussion. Everybody knows that the animals you are most likely to be killed by in Louisiana are:

1. pigs
2. black panthers
3. red wolves.

I've messed with pigs my whole life until they disappeared 2 years ago. Other than marking them, catching them in traps or having dogs rile them up, I have only had one bluff me by rushing. He made me step into the bed of my truck twice and then he suddenly realized I was human and ran away as fast as he could.

One that I was trying to catch did end up making me have two knee surgeries but that was from just running into my knee while trying to get away.

As always, a handgun is just a "good enough gun" to fight your way to a real gun (i.e. a rifle or shotgun).

If the need is there, invest in a good sling and a carbine. Even if chambered in a pistol caliber, you're going to get better performance and use hotter rounds more applicable to pigs.

TLDR - If I am expecting to face a pig that I will want to shoot, I will carry a rifle.

Which is remarkably consistent with a story told by Pops Midnight that happened about 70 years ago.

(ETA: For complete accuracy, Pops and a friend were both chased AND treed.)

Second option because its fun to mix it up, is a good 357 revolver. S&W 686 4" barrel or a Colt Python. Both will hold value, especially if you buy an older one, and are just cool as hell

S&W 357 in a Denali Style holster is the way to go here.

Me too. In the trap. Before we get in with the knives.

So, back to my situation of blasting when I see a sounder outside of my trap….

I have a chest holster like that I carry a blackhawk .45 in sometimes. Works really well. Looks goofy. I think mine is a Alaska Leather Company or something like that. Works really well for backpacking but otherwise I don't use it.

My handguns for carrying during hunting season or when I'm in the woods are both inexpensive 9mm's. I take good care of my guns, but didn't want to worry about getting a gun dirty, scratched, etc while in the woods. I carry a Taurus G2c in an OWB holster or a Canik TP9 Elite SC w/ the factory Kydex holster in OWB configuration. Both do the job w/o fanfare. If you're really serious about hogs, then suggestions for 10mm, 357 Mag and 44 Mag are good. Be aware, compared to your 40, both the 357 Mag and 44 Mag have a LOT more muzzle blast and 44 Mag has a LOT more recoil. If you want to be a little different, a heavy loaded 45 Long Colt in the right handgun would be an equal to the 44 Mag.

Yes, my GP100 with a 3 inch barrel generally gets the call when I walk in the woods. Also have 3 stripper clips full of .357 in my pocket. Because the stripper clips sit flat in my pocket, I much prefer them to speed loaders.
