Doctor comes from Latin and means "teacher" ("medicus" is a medical physician).
Yes, some people are obnoxious about their title but that's what the word actually means (i.e. they have enough expertise in a particular field to teach it).

Everyone that got a post-grad from a (usually un-accredited) HBCU.
They typically work for a .gov.

PHD = Dr, whether you like it or not.
Medical doctors practice medicine. Not all doctors practice medicine. Sorry you’re too ignorant to know this.

I have a JD and have never once called myself doctor, although it’s been extremely tempting when some douche canoe English Lit PhD insists on being called “Dr.”
To quote the great Joseph Bockrath, “if you don’t make me feel better, I’m not calling you ‘doctor’.”

Ever read the "dissertations" of some of those social sciences or education majors? It won't take you long. I've seen some that were 25 pages of crap. One dude wrote about people in Austin who liked to go cruising in their cars in the 1990's. My engineering MS thesis was 235 pages of math and graphics.
What is a social science doctorate supposed to write about? They aren't studying math, so they obviously can’t write about that.

The stupidity on this site never ceases to amaze me. But then I remember it’s full of Louisiana baws.

Please read this: LINK )
The fact is that in old Europe Physicians got jealous and started referring themselves doctors. Historically, it was those who have doctorates (PhDs) could call themselves doctors.
another fact: PhDs who know this are amused by the ignorance of most of the "doctors." I always refer to my PCP as a physician on her face, never as a doctor. She refers me as Dr. ... because of my doctoral degree.

There is certainly a lot of fluff in the social sciences, but educational research features some of the most sophisticated quantitative methodologies out there. If anyone wants to question the rigor or scientific validity of it, I encourage them to give one a read and see if you can understand it without having an advanced degree in math or statistics.
Even on the qualitative side, there are plenty of people doing valuable work to understand society and culture and how it relates to education. Their dissertations certainly aren’t 25 pages long and probably feature much greater depth and innovation than some master’s degree dweeb proving they understood their field.

And here is a pubmed article also arguing why PhDs are the legit doctors and MDs are more akin to JDs.
