Cgrand, we may know each other. I, too, was there every chance I got ; sometimes as many as 5 days a week.
And, I attended that same institution as a frosh when you did.

the gondola over the river was terrifying.
I actually worked at a food booth for a while and went there almost daily. We found a secret path and would go up and watch the fireworks on the river from the roof of the convention center, drink beer and blaze away after work.
I still have my season pass somewhere in the attic

I was there and it sucked. Not worth remembering or commemorating. It fact, it was so bad that the World's Fair has never come back to the United States since.
Expo ‘86 in Vancouver was awesome.
World’s Fairs in the USA were already on decline pre New Orleans. Knoxville and Spokane were hosts. Supposedly Seattle with the Space Needle was the last great American one.

For the OP…..have a friend with one of these hanging in his garage (in great shape) that he’s not attached to.

For us oldheads who were around back then and had season passes (you had to get them at Maison Blanche)- there was no better time to be had as a kid than going to that Fair every weekend .. to this day,, it always kinda blows my mind when it’s talked about as a colossal failure, since i have nothing but great memories.. then again, i wasnt a financier with skin in the game, i was just a kid .
I agree, I was 11 when the fair came and it was great.
Was just thinking didn’t ponchatrain beach close down pretty close to that time?
Another great place for a kid sigh…

There were two versions. I used to have them both.
Really wish I still did

"Plagued with attendance problems, the 1984 Louisiana World Exposition was the only exposition to declare bankruptcy during its run. As of 2023, there has not been a World's Fair in the United States since the exposition in New Orleans. "
Add to that Knoxville and NOLA were both Specialised Expos which are significantly cheaper to run than the true World Expos.

Set up an eBay saved search for the sign, which will automatically email you when a new listing comes up. It may take a year or two but eventually one will be listed within your price range. $1,400 is way too much for that.

Things like going to New Orleans to attend a fair were not allowed. Plus, we had friends who did attend and got their 1984 Cadillac stolen.
How can this be? We have been told on here that everything was better in the 80's.

My wife has one. Willing to sell, most likely. What's your best offer?

but didn’t it basically kill the whole concept of ‘World Fairs’ altogether?
Not completely.

I also got to go to Expo 86 in Vancouver, though that was also sort of tied to a family visit.
My whole family and I had fun at the New Orleans one, anyone bitching they didn't have fun is a weirdo. Or maybe he had to work it

Does anyone remember the large carved wood frogs that held an umbrella? I think they were at the entrances. They stand about 5’ tall, are solid wood and look like a large bull frog. I picked one up a few years ago at an auction and that’s where they said it came from

Yes, the year before in September 1983.
