Came across a grizzly fishing a creek in Alaska. I look to my right and see a grizzlies head poked out of the bushes staring at me. Very tense situation. He was trying to cross and we were in his way. He eventually went around us. But when got back to the plane and took off after that encounter, we saw 6 more in the area we were fishing.
Black bears I’ve seen quite a bit. I grew up next to wekiva state park here in FL and they roam the neighborhoods. Pretty cool. Except when they get in your trash.
I live closer to the city now so don’t see them as much but we’ve had a few spotted recently.

About 1989 I saw a black bear while turkey hunting near Amite. I was downwind of it so I don't think it knew I was there, it wandered off in the other direction.

Back in 1989 I was hunting squirrels outside of Mt. Home, AR. I was walking a trail through woods, watching the trees, when suddenly a black bear stepped out onto the trail, maybe 10 feet away. I was armed with a 22 pump, loaded with shorts, so in one move I shouted, pivoted and began running back the way I had been walking. After 20 yards, I looked back, and the bear was running just as hard in the opposite direction.
Have seen several in Cades Cove, TN, all from the car. One a mother and two cubs.
Maybe 11 years ago, there was a black bear roaming around the west side of Meridian. One afternoon, I saw him in a field, minding his own business. There were photos of him n the paper, walking down the middle of a parking lot on MJCC, with cars on both sides. I figured he was going to class. Eventually reports of seeing him in yards on that side of town died down. Have no idea what happened to him.
Took a group of scouts to Philmont scout ranch in Cimarron, Arizonia in 1993. We were hiking a trail and saw a big grizzly about 200 yards from where we were on the trail. We were hiking down the bottom of a small valley and he was about halfway up a small ridge that ran the length of our planned trek that day. We kept going, I talked with my scouts about bear safety (we had several cans of bear spray) and I bet I heard him 50 times over the rest of the day. That night, I tied our bear bag (food) as high as I could get it and twice as far from our camp as we normally did. For the next two days, all I could think about was what I would do if he was following us. Never saw him again. That was fine with me.

Funny story. I had a little old gray haired lady who was one of my inspectors at Baxter when we were in MT. Home. Her husband was a preacher and they lived really close to the buffalo river, below Yellville. She was always complaining about the bears trying to get into their trash cans, which they kept in a bear proof enclosure. One day she said she had taken the trash out the night before and encountered four black bears at the trash bin. I asked her what did she do? She said, "Like always, I threw rocks at them until they left." That is how rural Arkansas folks do it, I guess.

I live in MT, so they’re pretty commonly seen. I worked at Glacier for several years, and have spent time living in the Madison Valley. I’ve been bluff charged by a grizzly in a cliff band on a peak on the continental divide, in the park. It came within 8 feet of me; it swiped its paw in the air and stood on its hind legs looking down on me. I hopped down the ledge instinctively. That same day I saw 6.
Last fall, during hyperphasia, a blackie hopped over my 6’ privacy fence into my backyard to get into secure garbage alongside my house.

One of my favorites, Bear 25 (Nikki) who lived near the Mendenhall Glacier for 20 years. Last year was the first year she didn't return, she passed away.
She was about 15' off a trail with her cubs. They were fishing and napping.

Saw a black bear mother and cub(s) on the trail in front of me in Wyoming. I took off running, which was a terrible idea, but instincts took over.

I saw a mama bear and her two cubs playing on the edge of the woods at Cades Cove by Gatlinburg. It was pretty cool. They were running around playing and every now and then the mama would run the cubs up a tree. It was definitely a treat to be able to watch them

I saw two bears in a cut cornfield this morning in Madison Parish.
I’ve seen as many as five bears on an afternoon deer hunt in Madison Parish.
I’ve had hundreds of best sightings in my life. From Florida to California.

I was up at Lake Koocanusa in Montana for vacation in July. Had a black bear, 2 deer and an Amish buggy all pull out/run out in front of me that week. After seeing the bears wander around the Smoky Mountains, it surprised me to see how fast the bear crossed the road.

Me and my now ex and my then 3 year old were at a cabin near Gatlinburg. It was time to check out. I was packing the car, making sure to lock the car in between trips, as a precaution against wildlife intrusion. My now ex, and she was prone to doing of course ridiculed me for taking such precautions.
Then wouldn't you know it, a mamma bear and two older cubs just happen upon our cabin while I am inside packing the final load. The sliding patio door was open as they approached. They paused for a second to take a look at the scene, probably 15 feet away although it felt like 5. The three of us humans are kind shocked with awe, just staring at the natural wonder unfolding before us. Then my son decided it's a good idea to try and pet one so I snap out of it, pull him inside, along with the ex. Then we are held hostage for about 30 minutes with the bears snooping all around outside an occasionally hanging out by windows in full view.
Then on the way out we saw like 8 bears in Cades Cove from a distance of maybe 200 yards. That was not nearly as exciting.
On the other hand, I hiked the souther-most 450 miles of the AT in my 20's, did see one goddamn bear the entire time.

In the middle of Winter,
The trees are bare
And the bears are hibernating
