Sort of like the day of the JFK assassination, almost everyone alive on 9/11/01 can remember where they were when they first heard about the planes hitting the World Trade Center.

I was working in Almaty, Kazakhstan and with the 12 hour time difference between New York and Almaty, I was already back in my apartment after work on that Tuesday evening.

I had turned on Fox News (satellite dish) to see what stock futures were doing prior to the stock market opening that morning in NY.

They broke into their regular programming to report "a small plane had hit the north tower of the WTC."

My first thought was "how in the hell could a pilot not see the WTC in front of him and just flew into it?!?"

Then they switched to a live camera showing the hole in the tower with smoke billowing out of it. I saw that and thought, "That AIN'T a small plane. That had to be an airliner hitting the tower."

A few minutes later while the camera was still on the tower you could see the second airliner hitting the south tower with flames shooting out from the south tower.

The FOX talking heads (Dumb and Dumber) reaction was, "The heat from the burning in the north tower just ignited a fire in the south tower!"

I screamed at the TV, "You idiots. Another plane just flew into the south tower!!"

Within minutes they corrected themselves and said another plane hit the other tower. That's when I knew it was a deliberate attack on the WTC and on the United States.

About an hour later the U.S. embassy representative called me and said don't go to work the next day. All U.S. citizens were advised to stay in our residences until it could be determined if U.S. interests around the globe were subject to further attacks.

In class in CEBA at LSU. Heard about it between classes and went to the computer lab and saw some articles. Then went to my 9:00 class and the professor came in and told us about it and sent us home.

I remember freaking the frick out because my parents were in Florida on vacation and Bush was in AF1 flying to Florida. So for all I knew the attacks would follow him there, and I couldn't get a call through on my cell so I was thinking the worst. Was super relieved when I finally got through to them.

In my apartment at ole miss my junior year. I was nursing a hangover and my then girlfriend (now wife) called me in a tizzy. I turned on the tv just in time to see the 2nd impact. I’ll forever remember that awful day.

Silver lining-politics took a back seat for an extended time, and the news/media was very watchable.

5th grade, my teacher was married to the principal and I remember him knocking on the door and whispering something to her, which even seeing him in that way was uncommon.

19 year old me was setting pin placements at the golf club I worked at. Had been by myself for several hours and didn't realize what had happened until well after the fact.

Camp Lejeune. Just happened to be in the company office and saw it happen live. Interesting times after that. I looked at the Marine next to me and said we’d be deployed soon. Didn’t take long. He died in Fallujah. RIP Lonny.

Freshmen at Northwestern in Natchitoches. Dorm room getting ready for class and turn on tv to see the news break in. It was a clear and cool morning. Great weather. I was in disbelief. Classes were canceled and I went to the cafeteria to get breakfast and sit and stare at Fox/CNN tvs with other students watching.

I remember people freaking because Bush landed at Barksdale in AF1 when he left Florida with the school kids.

Lots of people started heading out to give blood.

I had a strong urge to call my folks back home and ask if they were alright.
