Same situation in BR, it’s because it looks way better having display models rather than completely empty shelves so people can’t even look at them or try them on. They aren’t hoarding watches in the back, Rolex doesn’t produce enough watches on purpose, exclusivity is part of the brand.

They're so exclusive you can't even buy them anymore!

I've quit lusting over them. Saving up for a tudor instead.

Rolex calls the shots and makes the AD ask how high when they say jump. Or they will pull your AD status.

The waitlist is a Rolex thing. The AD wants to sell more watches but Rolex decides the allocation. It may take a month, 3 months, 6 months or a year. It’s a freaking mystery of the universe when yours will arrive.

Hate the game not the AD players.

As far as artificial supply control Rolex makes the better part of a million watches a year, far more than anyone else in the upper mid-range except Omega. They could likely make more GMT Master IIs and less 27mm Date Justs but Rolex has the luxury to think long-term because they are privately owned and not have to meet shareholder expectations for the quarter like say Swatch Group. Even if they could sate current demand it would require them to ante up CAPEX and the way they build watches that is significant. Honestly, they are doing the right thing for their long term and for their long time customers. At least they aren't doing like Patek where Thierry Stern outright said they will limit stainless watches and then they discontinued the 5711 Nautilus at the height of its popularity and with 6-7-8 year waiting lists. It is still my contention that the gray market is the main "problem" which is spurred by Rolex requiring ADs to take multiple hard to move watches for every hot watch they get, they have to move those Cellinis and women's Date Justs somehow.

OP they have some for sale, you just have to spend $20k+ in jewelry you don’t want before even being considered for one.

They don’t have lists, they have “request forms”. A list implies some kind of sequence, with which there is none.

I filled out a request form for a submariner 3 years ago. I believe that form was thrown away the second I walked out of the store.

I agree. When I don’t wear a watch it just doesn’t seem right. Unless it’s my Tudor watch I usually wear it to bed.

I agree with you. But you also have to admit that many (not all) Watch guys can also get pretty douche about showing off their collections.

Obtuse1 respectfully pointed out how a watch allows you to check the time professionally, quickly, and tacitly in a professional setting when you are an exec, lawyer, doctor, etc. So that has given me a new level of respect for someone in that position to own nice watches. Now, my daughters orthodontist wearing very expensive watches still looks like a douche imo and she’s a women. But I do agree there’s a time and place for them.

I don't get why anyone would buy a stainless Rolex when $500 super fakes are almost indistinguishable.

Why would you want to wear a fake timepiece?

Honestly, I prefer the aesthetic of the vintage inspiration of Tudor over Rolex.

It’s a preference thing.

Same reason people buy AC Cobra replicas...same look and feel of the real thing at the 1/8th of the price.

Which is defeating the purpose of owning an authentic watch.

I guess that works if you're buying a watch to impress others, rather than something that you truly enjoy and/or want to pass down.

Im not suggesting one to buy a replica, just providing some rationale.

This next generation will likely turn their nose at luxury mechanical timepieces at the rate we are going.

I wouldn't. I wear cheap watches.
But I've held real vs fake and the faks use real bezels and faceplate with the etched logo. You only tell the difference after you pop open the back.
People paying that much for hulks and pepsi are crazy.
