Look at it from an economic point of view. It is far cheaper for society to pay for medicine that decreases major health issues caused by obesity than it is to pay for the treatment of major health issues caused by obesity. The same also applies to off-label drug/alcohol addiction issues being treated by these drugs. It becomes even more economically advantageous if you consider that the previous obese/addicted are now able to potentially contribute more to society.

See how will power doesn't really work well for that scenario? Your body is telling you that you want sex ALL THE TIME... you're biologically driven to want to reproduce. It doesn't matter how much will power you have. You might substitute rubbing one out every night instead of going to pound town, but you'd still want it constantly. BTW - the reason I know this is because I'm taking semaglutide right now and can tell you that the major benefit is the indifference between eating or not eating foods that used to be major drivers for me. Sugary stuff more than anything.

False equivalence.

Sex hormones function properly when a male is healthy and doing everything right.

You want sugar because you eat sugar. Sugar is extremely addictive.

It also changes the composition of your gut biome which not only disrupts how you metabolize food, it causes certain types of bacteria to flourish which can then alter your taste buds and create cravings for sugary foods.

I am cynical about it, too. Just seems like such a shock to the system there has to be major side effects

The drug fixes a hormonal imbalance in the body that causes obesity. When you stop taking the drug, the imbalance (big shocker) presents again. So, yes, the positive effects of the drug stop when you stop taking the medicine. Continuing to think like the quoted text above is an impediment to acceptance and access.

So the main reason people are obese is not diet related but hormone related? If they don’t change their diet and get on this pill will they lose weight?

I take the minimal dose of semiglutide for plaque prevention associated with Alzheimer’s. The peptide has shown promise in reducing plaque formation.

My mother has early onset Alzheimer’s and I’d drink a gallon of horse urine daily if they told me that would prevent Alzheimer’s. It’s terrible to see someone in their early 60s with it.

Well no. Being a GLP-1 agonist, in high enough doses it reduces appetite and tricks the brain into feeling like the stomach is "full". Most people seem to change their diet on the meds, but they can always revert if/when they go off it. It is just like any weight loss regimen once you reach your target weight you still have to maintain a proper balance of calories in/calories out to avoid gaining weight.

I am on 0.5mg subq weekly. My greatest benefit is the decrease in appetite. I am not hungry at breakfast, have a mid morning snack (beef jerky these days), drink a protein shake after my workout at lunch and a smaller than usual sized dinner. I am down about 7-8 pounds in the last month or so.

No lunch, just a protein shake?

I’ve been in MJ since march… I’m down 19% of my body weight, drinking probably 1/4 of what I did prior to, and eating the cleanest I’ve eaten in 39 years. Its the first drug I’ve taken that makes it sustainable. I’m a very active fat arse but weight still wouldn’t come off unless I starved myself, MJ changed that. There’s way more to this than calories in-calories out.

Your experience is quite common. Patients are reporting quitting smoking, gambling, drinking, and so on.

We are past the stage of hypothesis with a lot of this. Just because many won’t accept the facts doesn’t mean we don’t have the facts.

If you’d like me to refer to the protein shake as meal then sure. I have lunch.

It’s sure not the previous lunch I had which was whatever leftovers or maybe sandwich I could eat.

I think the increase in 0besity the last 30 yrs has much to do with food stamp availability. Just today at Rouse's I watched this enormous fat lady with a baby buy a huge box of crispy creams and pay with stamps.

I see them ride around on their fat mobiles with inches of fat hanging over checking out with potato chips, ice cream, and other junk foods.

Like smokers and Chantix or heroin addicts and Methodone? There are PLENTY of drugs meant to change habits and/or help someone ween off an addiction. Some stay on them forever- many others are able to grow, change and eventually get off the drug. Seems like this is the same situation
