How can one abuse "Unlimited PTO"?

This is our first year having "unlimited PTO". The caveat is "if you abuse it, you're subject to disciplinary action". They didn't explain what "abuse" was. No idea how they would define this or how it would be defended. Our upper management was given the order to not lay out any guidance to managers on what's acceptable or what isn't. Prior to this, I had 5 weeks of vacation so that's my benchmark.
The company did this undoubtedly for their benefit. They don't have to pay out unpaid vacation if you get fired or leave. Ideally, I'd like to come out ahead by a few days. In the world of ambiguity, does this cross over to "abuse" in your mind? And what would you interpret as "abuse" if this were the policy where you worked?

They also do this so they don't have to pay out 5 weeks when they let someone go....

I would schedule 1 more week off than I was allowed/had taken the previous year

They definitely need to define "abuse" in this situation. They are absolutely trying use this to fire people and bait them

one of the companies i resell with has unlimited PTO as long as you're meeting QBR numbers. most of them don't seem to abuse it, but one of my peers met his year end goals early in the year and went on vacation all the time with very strict "no contact" emails.
good for him on making his numbers and i applaud using your available vacation but there are a lot of times where we needed quotes and paperwork from him and went over his head when he didn't reply on vacation and he got pissy about it.
it wasn't like "oh we bugged him on his one week off" sort of thing. he's had close to 2 months out of the country this year already.

I think this has been looked at and typically people use less vacation days if they are given the option of unlimited PTO.

"Unlimited PTO" is just how offices get away with not having to pay out any unused PTO.

This 100%. We have unlimited PTO at our company and we are quite small. Anytime a PTO request for more than 2 days is put in you start hearing from management why this “isn’t the best time to take a break” bullshite rolls in

All of us (including my manager) agree. I'm certainly not taking less vacation time. And I don't feel one bit guilty. I didn't stick around here for 18 years and earn my vacation only for them to pull the rug out. And I'd like to use more, because I know most people are probably feeling guilty about taking any amount. So I need to make up the difference to some degree for my slacking co-workers. But how would you define abuse here? And what real recourse does the company have in this case if you keep it consistent within a few days of your historical vacation time?

I've had it for years. I like it because I don't have to worry about roll over hours, how many I have banked, etc...
Our company used a formula per years of service as most do I assume.
I take plenty of time off but, I try to stay around the amount of days that I would get in the old system. I haven't heard of anyone abusing it. Honestly don't think it's tracked very much. I would assume if someone was perceived as abusing it, that it would be tracked..

If an employer ever tells me unlimited I'm not showing up and seeing how long it takes before they fire me.

I would say abuse is if you dont do any work and are always on vacation.
