Why anyone would want to a job like that is beyond me.

What's the incentive to approve any time off?

Definitely in an office setting.. They'd have a spreadsheet on your arse..

good for him on making his numbers and i applaud using your available vacation but there are a lot of times where we needed quotes and paperwork from him and went over his head when he didn't reply on vacation and he got pissy about it. it wasn't like "oh we bugged him on his one week off" sort of thing. he's had close to 2 months out of the country this year already.

That sounds exactly what the OPs company means by “abuse”. That is the type of dude that ruins it for everyone.

If you’re going to take off the 2 months at least log in some of those days to keep things flowing.

My old company did this. As long as work is completed and nothing is lagging, no one gave us crap for taking off. It was great but the boss was super laid back.

There was some guilt tripping occasionally but we all just laughed it off.

We recently went to this for upper management. I had 3 weeks so I am sticking to 3 weeks. They wanted that vacation off the books plain and simple. There is no "unlimited" PTO at all

ETA: I would be careful using too much depending on industry. It could be used to show how you aren't needed if you take too much

Define “abuse”.

If I have legit medical issues or family issues, that isn’t abuse.

If I’m constantly taking time off so I can do a pilgrimage following Nickleback on tour? THAT is abuse. In multiple senses.

The caveat is "if you abuse it, you're subject to disciplinary action".

Basically, if you're doing your job and producing, nobody cares. At least that's how I would understand it.

Isn't that only if the PTO is earned. If it is granted, I don't believe they don't have to pay it out.

Depends on the state as well. My favorite was my past employer (who bought my old one) had different handbooks for different states, but just listed they will pay the minimum out of PTO forced by state.

Our company switched to unlimited PTO last year and I just went through to see how much PTO I took. Looks like 7 weeks.

Common sense would work here.

If you are taking a day every week "abuse"

This sounds like a good way to make employees feel too guilty to use PTO.

I have a buddy who works for a transatlantic tech company. He says they have unlimited PTO. The Brits use it liberally, but reasonably within a UK context. The Americans barely take any PTO at all under the system.

What if you're getting the work done?

I would say it's abuse if you're not getting your work done... leaving teammates hanging and are literally unavailable or the one that's out a day or 2 every week.

THat's abuse.

But working a 2-4 weeks straight and taking off Friday and Monday, with permission from whomever you report to - nah. That's fine. Just don't leave your teammates hanging on big stuff, projects or your customers.

My work is done today but I'm sitting in front of my computer until 2:00 pm

I started at 6 am so 2 pm is my 8 hours

So you're okay with getting nothing done for a couple of hours, logged in and staring at the computer, but if a cat gets everything done in 4 days, it's per se "abuse" to take the 5th day off, even if unlimited PTO?

I would be curious as to what goes into your analysis.
