Let Me Get This Straight

Hospital just called to tell us our bill to have our first child will be $4,200 out of pocket after insurance.
The average American has less than $5,000 in savings. We can only assume Louisiana is below this average.
So I have private insurance, get hammered by federal tax income, work over 40 hours a week to provide for my family, and have to pay $4,200 cash to have a child, but someone with Medicaid pays $0 and has the government front the bill?

Not only that, they also can get transportation costs (including airfare) and hotel accommodations if needed.

Sounds like out of pocket max will be met. Thank Obama and then thank McCain’s bitch arse.

This pisses me off. They're incentivizing folks who shouldn't have kids to have kids

Yep. We paid about that for our most recent (7 years ago). A family member from Maryland, same job (teacher), paid maybe $500. Ever person here who gets something "free" is paid for by those with insurance.

It's inconsiderate to flaunt your privilege(s).

Get a detailed bill break down, and start sending snail mail letters complaining.
Memorial Hermann attempted to charge me $654.50 for one gram of IV acetaminophen (Tylenol) THREE YEARS after my daughter got tubes put in. The price for the same amount of the same drug was $35.05, and I offered to pay them $60. It took about 18 months, but I sent a letter about every 60-90 days, with copies of all the previous letters, and they wrote it off.
They also "reversed" a "managed care discount" of $238.29 six weeks after surgery, which they never explained, and I never paid.
All in all, it was a little over four years from initial payment at the date of service to them giving up on trying to collect after I repeatedly disputed.
There's gonna be stuff on your bill that can be questioned.

How else do you think they pay for all of the people that are having kids for free? You think the doctors and nurses are just volunteering their time?

Have you had the baby yet? My hospital tried to get me to prepay when we did early registration. Asked them how they knew what my insurance would pay out before they submitted claims because I've always been told that isn't possible. Told them I wasn't paying anything until it ran through insurance first and I could go through the itemized billed. Ended up being half of what they told me it would be. Thought it was pretty shady.
