Why did they remove “HBO” from Max?

I don’t really understand this move by HBO
HBO is such a huge, reputable name in the movie/film industry
From what I have gathered, it’s still the same app but just called Max now but for a marketing standpoint, max is not very marketable because max isn’t known to have great series like
Sopranos
Entourage
Ballers
The Wire
Curb your enthusiasm
HBO documentaries
Etc
Unless, eventually they plan to relaunch an HBO app with all of their old, award winning stuff in there
It just doesn’t make sense to me why they rebranded this Max and took out the HBO part of the branding

Gotta make room for reality TV schlock from Discovery

Because the guy in charge is from outside of HBO and it seems like he felt HBO was too premium of a brand and they want a service that everyone will sign up for. I understand why he might feel that way, but it still feels like a dumb move even in that context.

A list of great HBO series without including GOT and Veep? Blasphemy.
To your original point, this was done because of the merger between HBO Max and Discovery+ into a single App.

Does this mean we're gonna get more of those great series and movies that made Skinemax what it was back in the 80s and 90s???
In all seriousness bringing back The Hitchhiker and Tales From The Crypt would make this app the absolute best!!

What’s New in Max: 10 Key Changes as HBO Max Relaunches With Discovery Content, Enhanced Features
While they're losing the "HBO" brand name, "Max" is likely appealing for at least a couple of reasons:
1. From a marketing standpoint, a one syllable brand name is better than a three syllable brand name.
2. Think of the easy marketing opportunities that are already built into the name (e.g., "MAXimum entertainment!").
I'm just happy they didn't take the lazy approach of adding a "+" to the name. I think "Max" is much better than "HBO+." The fad of adding pluses to streaming service names needs to die.

It switched over today
I wish they’d fricking stick with something.
Year ago it went from HBOgo to HBO max and now it’s Max
Supposedly it’s a seamless transition and I won’t have to download the new app and re-sign in this time around . We will see

Sadly, due to licensing issues, this is unlikely to ever happen

It is confusing because I associate "Max" with Skinemax and it gives me a pavlovian boner.

BC much like everyone else in the entertainment industry, they have terrible ideas.

quote:Snapple had a hugely successful ad campaign with "Wendy the Snapple Lady". Then Quaker Oats bought Snapple, and their ad agency immediately stopped the Wendy campaign and switched to a less successful campaign. Years later, when asked why they stopped what was a great set of commercials, the lead ad guy said, "When you take over an account, you have to change things. If you don't, and you have success with the previous agency's plan, they get the credit, not you."
Why did they remove “HBO” from Max?
HBO has new owners. They'll make changes, look for a success story anywhere that they can find in those changes, and take credit for the "improvements".

In fairness, HBO hasn’t been known to have great series recently either.

Yep. Lots of this with studio management changes.
For example, the Columbia sale in the mid-late 80s meant that the new leadership dropped every movie in the pipeline approved by the last guy. That is why a bunch of films like Baron Munchausen had insanely low grosses.

frick it, I just ordered the full DVDs of The Hitchhiker, Tales From The Crypt and Tales From The Darkside. Now I don't have to be restricted by licensing.
