It literally has AIDS. My Malware bytes went nuts while visiting that website. Shocker because the link you provided is from a very reutable website. They must have gotten hacked with a malware virus or something

RA’d for posting boobs. But maybe it was an elbow… or a full size car… or someone’s head. But it definitely looked like a boob.

I have been thinking the same thing. Max is Cinemax which was the inferior perverted little brother to hbo. Maybe I’m just old and the focus group doesn’t have that connection and they just know max is a word that means more

If they weren't willing to pay for the rights to those back when everyone was pouring endless money into building their streaming services they sure as shite aren't going to do it now in an era where every single streamer is dumping their own original shows off their service just to avoid paying a tiny arse amount of residuals.

It's a dumb, short-sighted move that squanders (IMHO) a premium brand (HBO) in favor of some generic, "sounds good at a focus group" label, "MAX."

Really dumb.

Branding is complicated, especially when you have a square peg / round hole situation like Discovery & Warner.

Originally we had HBO Go. Then Warner (AT&T?) decided they wanted to create a one-stop streaming platform to house all of their content. Putting Cartoon Network content inside the HBO Go app obviously would have been a little weird. So they rebranded to HBO Max - which works because it implies both “HBO + Cinemax” as well as “HBO + more.”

Now you have Discovery buying WarnerMedia and the Discovery execs feel like their Discovery+ streaming service is also successful. I don’t know how true that is but you can bet thats how they see it.

IMO it would make perfect sense to just roll Discovery+ into HBO Max because it still fits that “HBO and more” mold. But that would require the Discovery branding/marketing people to acknowledge that their brand is straight up inferior to HBO Max. So they change it to make it “their” branding idea instead.

This shite happens all the time with M&A among big conglomerates.

I get the idea that everyone is being critical of losing an iconic brand such as HBO from the name.
It is absolutely iconic.

But... who doesn't know that it is the HBO content?
Losing a brand name from a consumable that everyone knows includes the brand is virtually no loss.

The only people complaining are people loyal to HBO...which they can still get everything and then some on the app. HBO is still there.

I call it 'picking nits'.

They've already started removing HBO content to make way for the Discovery stuff. Don't be surprised if older HBO content gets the boot.

I don't get it. I think there are a lot of people, myself being one, who will give just about any series a shot if it has the HBO name attached. Not so much with MAX.

Never understood why “max” was added. The letters HBO and this intro was all the marketing they needed

just went and updated the app. a little different and cleaner.

i'll be curious if my wife takes over the TV more often with TLC, HGTV, and Magnolia network. she got kinda disgusted with TLC for pushing the Duggars and Jazz Jennings.

I'd love if some streamers would develop an "i'm feeling lucky" feature for series to where you could just drop in on a random office, cheers, flip or flop, fixer upper, house hunters, etc.

Had to download the new app but didn’t have re-sign in, everything else looks fine.

I think "+" makes sense within the context of streaming services that are associated with existing tv channels.

While they're losing the "HBO" brand name, "Max" is likely appealing for at least a couple of reasons:
1. From a marketing standpoint, a one syllable brand name is better than a three syllable brand name.
2. Think of the easy marketing opportunities that are already built into the name (e.g., "MAXimum entertainment!").

I'm just happy they didn't take the lazy approach of adding a "+" to the name. I think "Max" is much better than "HBO+." The fad of adding pluses to streaming service names needs to die.

Weird, because max has been around for a long time but HBO is still the winner.
