I think it can be nice when you need to rinse or soak large pots. Particularly in smaller kitchens where you may not have room for a large sink with multiple basins. Better to have one big basin than two useless ones.

It’s also more aesthetically pleasing having a large center basin instead of having a divider in the middle of your sink.

That said, I’d rather have a big 3-basin sink personally.

I hate them. My wife and I are redoing our kitchen now and I firmly put my foot down on this one. I let her have her way with most of the stuff but since I do most of the cooking I'm not compromising much as far as the stove/sink go. Not sure why she thinks she should have 100% say to it when she uses it 10% of the time.

Double basins suck.

Who the hell soaks dishes? Just run it under the faucet for a second and stick it in the dishwasher.

The bigger sink allows you to wash pots and cutting boards, etc.

Had a double sink and hated it. Love the new deep single basin

When we did a kitchen remodel we went with one large sink. I would not willingly go back.

Personal preference for me. I have a single basin because I got tired of large pans and things not fitting after a cookout or something. I also like to soak casserole dishes with baked on food. We have some big casserole dishes. I feel like anything you want to do can be done in a large single basin but if you want to soak something large there’s no way to do that in a double.
this. I love when people see something they don’t like in a new house and think they have some hot take on why it’s wrong.

Had to redo my kitchen after Ida, went back with a good sized split sink. I wash almost all of my pots in it with no trouble, the really big one I wash in the huge single tub sink in the utility room.

It's just the two of us now that the kids are gone so we just hand wash our dishes after dinner, takes all of 5 minutes. Haven't run the dishwasher in a few years other than when we have people over for a party.

I'll never own a house without one.

Double basin sinks are the equivalent to having a Razr flip phone.

That’s why there are 8 extra basins in the butler’s kitchen, skullery, outdoor kitchen, laundry, upstairs lounge, bar, master suite kitchenette, and guest suite kitchen. There’s an obsession with sinks, really.

Ugly and terrible design...

They will be out of style soon along with the modern farmhouse white trash design style.

The rectangular stainless like you have in the photo are the worst. Impossible to clean. The food all migrates to the corners when you rinse the plate.

Single bin is superior in every way. Dirty dishes go in the dishwasher, big items are able to fit in the sink to clean.

ETA: frick that sharp corner one in the OP though. That would be a bitch to clean.

Just replaced my double bin with a single last week. Looks so much nicer and way more accessible for washing babies and large pots

Not sure how long it’s been a thing but probably 90% of the houses being built in the past couple of years have these farm house sinks. I suspect it’s all about aesthetics and nothing to do with functionality.

Single bin is more functional since the advent of dishwashers.
