With the cancelation of this abortion and the third season of Picard returning some semblance of respect to the characters from Next Generation, it looks like the tide might finally be shifting at Paramount. The best thing Discovery did for Star Trek fans was use itself as a launching pad for Strange New Worlds - a superior show in every single way to Discovery.

Yeah, they're dumping Star Trek and giving all their money to Taylor Sheridan.

Bringing in Franks and letting the control the story more, it seems like its more TNG. Although I saw the scene with Worf fighting the gangsters, they did not need to show him cutting off heads.

This show drove me nuts. Retconning Spock to have a human adopted sister? Named Michael?
Honestly it became a better show when they went 500 years into the future. Oddly becoming the fastest ship because Spore drive which makes no sense.

The star trek nerd in me want more pre-TOS shows but done right. Both this and Enterprise were ruined with time travel.

I have no idea about anything Star Trek other than the 80s and 90s films, but apparently this show was getting watched by like 80,000 viewers each episode and the budget was originally around $10M per Ep in the first season.

This is not the first domino, either.

Chris Gore said the other day that he was told Hollywood is flat out of money, at basically every studio. It's all dried up.

Expect to see many more of these shite vanity/DIE projects take dirt naps.

5 seasons.

Let that sink in.

Many truly great TV shows never get that long.

(Original Star Trek got only 3)

5 seasons for any series (even in streaming) is no failure (especially an expensive series like Discovery). Plus it spawned the best Star Trek spin-off since DS9.

I think that jumping to the far future, where they could no longer damage current Star Trek, was a good move, but even that couldn't keep us from continuing to watch.

Hope they keep Strange New Worlds, I enjoy Mount as Pike.

Is the third season better than the second? Because the second season pissed me off in ways that were visceral and almost unhinged.

Ehh... while he does have a couple more shows in development for them I think this has more to do w/the fact that Showtime and Paramount Plus are basically being merged into the same entity.

I'd expect more P+ shows and Showtime shows to get axed over the next few months.

I was so damned disappointed in the third season. First season was good. Second season annoyed the frick out of me because they relied so heavily on TOS characters. Once I realized it was testing waters for STW, it was more tolerable but the whole thing about retconning Michael into Spock's family was just fricking stupid.

S3 lost me when they brought on the tranny girl and her love interest being the most effeminate male heterosexual character every played on a non-comedic show and then doubled down on that ridiculousness by making Tilly an officer. TILLY? The spazzy, over-sharing, over-worrier? She would have been red-shirted in a Klingon attack 10 seconds after her first appearance in a TOS episode.

After that, especially when there was so much "dystopian future" potential in stories they could have told, S4 and 5 were not worth my time.

That was one of the final straws for me. Even if a starship is lost with no hope for return (Voyager), the Starfleet chain of command and regulations need to stay in place.

SNW even made an entire episode about how Kirk being a dick averted a Romulan war, while Pike being an "awesome guy" would've doomed the Federation (in that one instance).

Bizarre that we had two simultaneous series promoting opposing messages.

My God that's amazing news

If they have to actually hire and produce on the basis of quality maybe more things will be worth watching

—I felt the same about Picard S2, but S3 is excellent

SPOILER ALERT!

Not only this but the whole "dystopian future" being caused because a child on a dilithium planet saw his dead mother and screamed so loud that he destroyed all the dilithium being used on starships in the whole galaxy.

A great giant mystery that caused millions to die all because of a child got scared.
