If he’s not a natural athlete it’s best he finds out now. Lots of end of the bench kids get nothing out of all the time and effort they put in to sports. Find out what he’s above average at and lead him that way.

You messed it up so the message gets messed up. It's a Herb Brooks quote. "Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard."
To OP, I'm curious which sport, I didn't read the entire thread. Seriously though, have your boy take up golf. There are places for him to compete even if not on a HS golf team. The game is a personal struggle that will teach him a lot of he applies himself.

Start working and taking time out of every day to practice the certain sport. Even MJ got cut from his team his freshmen year. Hard work beats talent every day of the week.

Now that I've read the thread I see Katy, TX and basketball.
I live up north and my kids play hockey. My recruiting pitch for U8 hockey recruitment is to ask the parents to look at the current HS basketball team and how many kids make the team and actually play, maybe 8? Now look at how many of kids your son's age are participating in basketball. How many will ever see the court by 8th grade? Play hockey.
All the TDers down in the Dallas area need to check out the Jr Stars youth program. Every populated area in Texas from Houston to Odessa to El Paso, College Station, Abilene, etc, etc has a youth hockey program. Sign your kid up.

The coach had them practicing three hours a day 4-5 days a week. He said frick all that. These coaches are insane.
He would've REALLY hated 80's era high school football.

Michael Jordan got cut from his JV high school bb team.
I led with this when my son didn’t make a HS team he tried out for. I told him that he can take it two ways.
Door number 1 is to quit and accept that his playing days for that sport are over and concentrate on something else. With this route comes potential regret, but could also be a door opening he didn’t anticipate.
Door number 2 is to use it as fuel and spend the next year working his butt off and try again next year. With this door comes the risk of not making it again.
Then I told him the decision was his, and that I’d support him in whatever he chose. He chose door number 1. He switched his focus from baseball to basketball and is now starting shooting guard on a varsity 5A team as a sophomore. God was pointing him in the direction he needed to go and he followed.

My son went through this. Didn't make a team he'd previously just played with. One of those "you must re-tryout every year" clubs.
This was for 12U.
He cried. Definitely a learning experience.
He tried out for another and caught on with them, and it was his best experience yet.
Then he quit for good next year and went full steam ahead into music and can play several instruments. Enjoying his copious amounts of free time, free weekends, and our extra pocket change.

Horrible answers in here. Teach your son how to make and save money. That’s all that matters.

I got cut from 4th grade baseball. Parents asked why I quit going to practice. Told them I got cut. We all moved on.

I will.
I am really excited for basketball though. I don’t know shite about it. So I can’t be “that dad”.
Golf and football I could be that dad. I know enough to be dangerous. I like to think I wouldn’t be, but…..

And he can play it his entire life.

We were zoned for Katy High School. Where football is concerned that is false. My son against a blue chip prospect? He’d could work out like an animal. He’d get abs and a cute girlfriend, but not a sniff of a starting spot.

NO FEAR

If he wasn't playing AAU or Travel basketball he more than likely had no shot of making the team. I see it all the time with kids playing baseball, soccer, basketball, softball etc.

Tough for sure. My son has dealt with unfortunate situations in sports, but the worst is yet to come I fear. He’s set his goals VERY high and is laser focused, but the lack of a backup plan scares the shite out of me.

If he's living and breathing it ever day and doing more than what's required to keep homing his craft and doesn't have to be externally motivated, then he has a great chance assuming he's realistic about his talent level

He’s the #1 kid in the country for his age, but that doesn’t mean the path will be without big time disappointments. He’ll be benched or cut or miss the big one…no one gets out of here alive.

People are missing a key element here. What if he doesn't like golf?
I like golf and wish I had learned golf at that age but that doesn't mean every kid is going to take to it. The kid should play what he has a passion for playing.
You have a bunch of adults in here that think they need to push whatever they want onto their kid instead of letting him choose his own path.
