Last night I just listened to him bitch and get a little upset. Get it out. I didn’t correct or instruct him… Yet. I felt he needed to pout for a bit. Today I will build him back up. In addition the selections aren’t complete until today. So this all may be a moot point.

Life will be full of disappointments. He needs to learn that. But also needs to know that I care and will continue to support him. Has to be a medium between “coaches suck” and “life sucks” and just blowing sunshine up his arse.

Yep - some of the biggest shite heads in all of high school are the coaches, especially some catholic high schools, with some daddy $ and coaching leading to better players not getting PT or on the team. Have seen it over and over annually for the last 15 years ++
The new Select teams in the playoffs are going to wash these a--holes closer to the bottom too. You will now have to win more than 1 game to make the Semifinals in 5A.

If he's white, there's no future in basketball anyway.

Could he maybe pick another sport?

Pretty sure Scotty Pippen was the manager at Central Arkansas before he decided to join the team.

Not sure if this helps or not, but i used to coach high school basketball at a school where everyone thought they were basketball players. Obviously we had to cut numerous kids.

I hated cutting kids, worst part of the job…but you can’t have 50 kids on a basketball team, so people aren’t going to make it.

I brought each kid into the office and spent about 2 minutes talking to them eye to eye. Either told them they made it or didn’t, then I allowed the kids that didn’t make it ask questions. I said positive things to the kids that were getting cut (got several to go out for track and wrestling). This way of making cuts was pretty much well received by everyone.

All that to say this…see if your son can talk to the coach one on one. Coaches are busy, but never too busy to talk to a kid. Have your son receive input and maybe something positive will come out of it.

We were zoned for Katy High School. Where football is concerned that is false. My son against a blue chip prospect? He’d could work out like an animal. He’d get abs and a cute girlfriend, but not a sniff of a starting spot.

The only concern that my son brought up that I thought was more than bitching was “all the football players who tried got in”. Which as a product of Texas high school football, I know at this stage of athletics football is always king and the other sports are just conditioning for football players before they can have an off season program due to age.

That’s the only coaching gripe I can really think of.

That is because they are the best athletes

Bigger, Faster, etc.

It was the same when I was in JH/HS 25-30 yrs ago.

Outside of varsity level the JH and HS coaches for BB are probably football coaches and have had their eye on kids playing FB.

Were the football players better than him? It makes sense that even if they were comparable the football players will get the benefit of the doubt as they're already in a team environment and many of them know each other. They're pre-approved so to speak.

That's life though, at times you have to be two times better than someone else to get the job. You leave it in the coach's hands, it may not go your way. Is it fair? Nope but it doesn't change the reality.

If baseball is really what he wants to do he has a clear advantage over those guys as he can practice baseball year-round whereas these guys have to split between football. By the next tryouts he could be leaving these guys in the dust, but it's up to him.

It's ok to be disappointed but I wouldn't dwell on it, I would focus on how much does he really want this. Someone else mentioned talking to the coach, that'd be a great start. If I were a coach and a kid asked how he could get better and came back to tryouts the next year I'd be really interested to see how much more prepared he was. It speaks to coachability.

Most of those teams ended up sucking and having shitty coaches who got fired. He wouldn't have been happy on those teams anyway.

Especially true in middle school as OP stated. Most MS coaches are awful and don’t care about developing.

Tell him to go out for tackle football. Even if he isn’t the best, typically they still need the #s for practice. I believe more then any other sport, Tackle teaches kids how to be a good team mate. Tackle will teach him discipline, toughness, and respect.

I coached Dixie Youth (11-12) year olds in Bossier. In my 20 years of coaching, the hardest thing I ever did was have to cut 3 kids. The league could have easily made another team with all the kids that were cut, but they had an extremely strong league and wanted it overall playing a high quality of baseball to strenghten it even more. Some "steel vs steel" crap. All 3 kids took it terrible, as did their heart broken parents. Retrospectively, I should have refused and played all 18. Rant over.

What? Wait - never made a team, huh. Share the "diminishing returns" on learning discipline, comradery, and team skills early in life, please.

Do you know what the phrase “diminishing returns” means? Or were you too busy focusing on travel ball to learn about that?
