It was possible to close it online before. Now, users have to call and they are put on a very long hold because I assume Paypal hopes people just give up and keep the account open.

What a cluster.

PS: Venmo is owned by Paypal.

That’s a lawsuit right there.

Making it ornerous to quit any service, ESPECIALLY one which can theoretically fine you $2500 for wrongthink, is just asking for a class action.

I'll never understand why a business would want to make a political stand. If I'm running a big company I'm operating like Switzerland. Democrat and Republican money is green.

Glad I closed mine two years ago after my credit card rep told me that it's one of the biggest ways thieves steal credit card info. She said they are often hacked, but they do a good job of keeping it quiet to the public.

On a side note relating to this, she also told me the other big method are restaurant servers taking photos of your credit cards and selling them to thieves.

Last week I started getting alerts that someone was trying to log into my account. Kept up for the better part of 2/3 hours despite me going in and denying/changing passwords so I just unlinked my bank account. Glad I did that after all this nonsense.

I never used PayPal - I had serious reservations about letting a service like this access my checking account.

One thing that those liberals in California did is something I actually agree with. Their law states if you can start an account online, you have to legally be able to close it online.

They're taking notes from the old AOL playbook. Remember trying to cancel your America Online account, and having to listen to a 20 minute sales spiel after sitting on hold for an hour?

PayPal must be struggling these days, and they've started allowing their politics to influence their decision making and policies.

With YoungRippa they used a never-before-used reserve policy that blocked his company from accessing over a million dollars. PayPal continued that "reserve" even after fulfillment of the product had started. They also would never give him a definitive answer on if or when the "reserve" would be taken off his account, it was a constantly changing target.

FWIW I just logged in online and closed my account in a matter of seconds.

No issues whatsoever.

I closed mine ~3 years ago due to some fraud that happened, and there was no option to close it online. I had to do it via phone, and then there was some crazy waiting period before it was closed.

So the option to close online must have been somewhat new.
